In part 1, a Nature Mage who used healing spells gained very little experience. In the latter stages of the game, monsters started dealing so much damage that you had to have one character with a healing spell as the active spell all the time, which means that character didn't level up any more. (An example: I recruited Adiemus (nature magic 24) when the rest of the party was at 20 in their respective skills. Adiemus used nothing but healing wind the entire game, and finished with a whopping 24.17 in nature magic, compared to ~53 for my other characters.)
So in summary: Does healing give as much xp per cast as attacking or is it still sucky (but necessary)?

I've got a Nature Mage that pretty much is consistently casting healing spells (especially with the new auto-slots) but she's maintained her rate of level up along with the rest of the characters, so it looks like healing has been un-nerfed (at least until this point, she's at level 18 now I think).
Maybe the problem is you're using the heal spell in the character's active slot. I've got a couple characters who have heal spells in their autocast slots, and they're leveling up at about the same rate as everybody else.

Sir Edmund: "Should you obey the lord who asks you to put a village of innocents to the torch? Is that chivalrous? Is it noble?"

Now that you say that, I remember a strange thing happened to me. I had Deru from the beginning using ranged weapons and having heal spell in autocast. When I reached level 42 with her – and by that time she was nature magic level 1 – she casted heal once and she levelled up 3!!! levels!, so from level 1 she jumped to 4. This should be strange.
