All uniques
I know that if one item of a unique set shows up in the game, all items in that set will appear. But can anyone confirm whether if you play through DS2 on all three difficulties levels, all unique items and sets eventually appear? Or is a random selection made?

I might be misreading, but that sentence seems false. So far as I can tell, set and unique item drops are completely random, depending on your level and the level of the enemy.

Sir Edmund: "Should you obey the lord who asks you to put a village of innocents to the torch? Is that chivalrous? Is it noble?"
Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

In addition, your question uses terms confusingly. So far in my game play, I have encountered both UNIQUE and SET items. In both cases, I have encountered multiple instances of each of those types of items. For example, I have two gauntlets called LORETHAL'S GRACE (from the Lorethal's Legacy set). Since I have the gloves both on my character and in the storage chest, that would seem to indicate that the game does not consider SET items a "drop once, never drop again this game" situation. Additionally, I have two identical UNIQUE shields. While I don't know why the developers would use the word "unique" to describe items which apparantly aren't "one of a kind," it is clear that they are not one of a kind items, and may drop more than once per game. As to whether dropping one item affects the chances that another item (possibly related) will drop; I'd agree with the above poster that it seems to be random; and the only apparantly restriction on item drops is that the item can't be N levels (I'd guess N=5 or so) above the highest character's level. Of course, this obviously has no bearing on scripted item drops, such as quest rewards.

My terms aren't confusing--I'm just simply wrong. Both of you, thanks for clearing the matter up. So it appears that I've just been lucky thus far in finding multiple parts to a given set, and that both sets and uniques may not be...well, unique, after all. It also seems that with the exception of quest-mandated items, anything may or may not appear in a given game.

They're called "unique" because that's what they were called in Diablo II. I think GPG would have been better off calling them "legendary" or "heroic."

fable is right
As soon as first set item is dropped, it means that the set fulfills the needed level. Statistically, with enough "farming" all items can and will be collected.
(oh the power of twisting words)

Okay, I'm officially confused. Let's try to clarify:
If you find one item of a set, does that mean that at some point in playing the three difficulty levels that we'll agree (for now) constitute a full game, you'll find the rest of that set?
Will all unique items show up in any full game, as defined above?
Thanks.

You're not guaranteed of anything. But set and unique items drop so frequently that you're likely to find complete sets by the time you finish. I'm working on an equipment database now, and I've logged over 130 items, but I still haven't completed Thena's (low level) set yet. Equipment drops are random, but the randomness is on your side.

Or perhaps, better to say that it's (quasi-)random, but you make it up in volume? Get yourself a few + magic find items. Every single group of monsters I fight drops at least one turqoise (green-blue) and usually a purple or gold. From what I understand, it's party cumulative, so the +20 you have on the archer and the +18 you have on the mage make it +38 for the party (which means when I go farming my party has something like +250%)

Set items seem to drop more frequently if you have other items of that set. I'm not sure if this is actually the case or if the items are close to the same level and mobs tend to drop them that way. However a given Set or Unique item can only drop once per run of the game. By saving and exiting and then reloading that info is reset and the same set item could drop again even if its the same game. So if you play the game through in one sitting without reloading you could only find any given set/unique a maximum of once and most probably wouldnt drop at all. Also certain creatures spawn these items at a higher rate then others.
