Giving weapons to Hirelings

This may sound like a dumb question but can you give weapons to hirelings? If so could someone tell me how

Only if you have the LoD expansion. Let your mouse hover over the merc's portret in the top-left corner of the screen for a second until it blinks, right-click, open your own inventory and give him/her weapons and equipment.

or you can hit the O button to bring the same screen up

Another thing...
Another useful option is to hold shift + 1, 2, 3, 4 to give your merc the corresponding potion from your belt, you may have known this though
