Problem installing 2.2 patch

I downloaded the 2.2 patch and unzipped it, but the file "gpgupdate.exe" will run neither automatically nor manually. Has anyone else encountered this difficulty? Is it advisable to forego the patch, or will I run into major problems? Thanks for the help.

I never had any problems running the game without the patch, but other people did.
