Hardware error

Post by Abyzz »

Greetings,

It's been long since I last played DS2, but yesterday I realised it was time to give it another go. So, after digging it up under a thick layer of dust I set upon exploring the world of Aranna once more. I installed it, even got it patched to 2.2, but then I encountered this:

I've searched through Microsoft's graphic card FAQ, I've searched Google and all the same: no answer.

And I can assure you my card isn't anything that Microsoft claims - it's a GeForce 7900 GT with 8x as much memory as required.

I'm hoping someone here knows how to fix it. Thanks in advance.

That looks like it's just a warning. Can you still play the game?

Error message showed up on me, with different game.... :(
downloaded update of graphics card....it changed my screen resolution and gave me more error messages... :(
so I just did a system restore to a week back and everything was back to my liking and no more error messages and games ran OK.

Well I can still play the game however the graphic is utter horrible and it's being rendered by my imbalanced "Primary Display Driver - Hardware TnL".

hmm, give this a try

go to "My Document" > "My Games" > "Dungeon Siege 2"

there you will find a file called "DungeonSiege2.cfg"

open it in notepad and see what it says.

mine for example says

Code: Select all

driver_description = NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500
width = 1024
height = 768
bpp = 16
mp_active_party = Boov
sp_last_saved_party = Boov
optout = true
sp_active_party = Boov
regrequest_sp = true
try changing the "driver_description" part to "NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT", or removing it all together, see if DS2 automatically configures it next time the game is loaded.

! BACKUP THE FILE FIRST !

Thanks for the feedback. The file you're referring to is on my computer named DungeonSiege2.ini instead, but it's all the same. Here's what it says:

Code: Select all

driver_description = NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO
width = 1680
height = 1050
bpp = 32
regrequest_sp = true
optout = true
sp_active_party = Ayla
sp_last_saved_party = Ayla
So without doubt my graphic card is indentified by DS2, but when I enter DS2VideoConfig.exe the only available video card is the one you see here:

Also notice that it now can't identify the graphic card other than it's manufactured by nVidia. So the config knows the exact model of my card, but the videoconfig is clueless. Beggin' you're pardon Microsoft, but can you decide?

I finally installed and started up Broken World last night, and I have the same problem as Abyzz. Probably not coincidentally, I also have the same graphics card. I looked around, and this thread might be helpful. It has an update for the system_detail.gas file so that the game will recognize newer cards like the 7900.

However, while the config program is now happy, nothing changed with the annoying flickering display problems I'm getting while in the game, and so I'm still looking into that.

Edit: Well, turning off SLI mode fixed the flickering. That's annoying, but oh well.
