Stale Mary and the Silent King
Stale Mary and the Silent King
Help - I can't get into the Silent King's chambers. Apparently, Stale Mary is supposed to open a portal - but there is no option for questioning - she will not utter anything intellegible nor will she teach me to speak with the dead. I tried forcing my way into the chambers, but once all the dead were...uh...dead, I still couldn't open the door without a key. I can leave the dead nations - but I would like to be able to confront the Silent King. Any suggestions?

It is actually possible to enter the Silent King's through a portal (Stale Mary). I played PST twice, ít worked only once. Maybe certain stats are required.
Possibly Many-as-One might help you - he wants you to kill the Silent King. But don't try too hard - you won't gain anything for getting into the Silent Kings chamber.
The Silent King, anyways, is extremly silent - he doesn't exist. Religion is opium for the undead?

If your INT isn't high enough to understand Stale Mary, and your CHA is higher than 15, you can get Stale Mary herself to teach you how to speak to her (Speak with the Dead). Otherwise, go back to Hargrimm and ask him about her and why you can't understand her. He'll tell you that you need to learn to listen. Go back to Stale Mary and tell her what Hargrimm said, and she'll then teach you the special ability.
Stale Mary will reveal the portal to the Silent King if your CHA is higher than 15 - mages can easily boost CHA by casting Friends.
You don't need to speak with the Silent King to leave the Dead Nations - ask Hargrimm if you can speak with him, he'll say no, tell him that you need the Silent King's permission to leave - and follow the dialog options to performing some quests. This, in IMO, is the best way to go if you're shooting for Lawful Good alignment.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

i have never gotten out of the Dead Nations, without exposing the Silent King, by that i mean, discovering that he is truely dead. and Hargrimm gives med permission to leave. and so now the Dead Nations is open. (to come and go as you please). but then again, i have never tried that Stale Mary woulden't teach me to speak with the dead.
TIP: take Soego's head before leaving. (after Hargrimm kills him). and swop it for Morte.

Now this is very strange. As soon as you get a permission from Hargrimm, you can get further to the Drowned Nations Catacombs through a side door. Perhaps you did not find the "correct" door.
One little addition to what was said above about Stale Mary (spoilerish!):
she opens the portal to the throne room only BEFORE you get the permission from Hargrimm. Once you've got a permission to leave, Stale Mary won't open the portal, and this way remains closed, so the only possible alternative is to cut the way to the Silent King through the hostile corpses (this is a way for evil characters, obviously).
