btw for future reference, by Solo Play i mean with no side-characters, just the main character
What class seems to be the best for solo play (in ur opinion) and PLEASE don't feed me that all classes are equal crap. also, subclasses count too, like 2-handed guys or shield guys instead of just a fighter

You're going to get a lot of the "Well, it depends on what you like." too.
I feel the easiest is the Shield-Fighter. Easiest to keep alive due to the heavy AC. Fights take forever at times as the damage done is mid-level.
The Dual-wielder can do the soloing well too, though the lower AC needs to be offset by regen % on hit items. Fights end fairly fast, cause if they don't, you're dead.
Archer, same as the dual-wielder above. Lotsa damage, range option, but AC sucks.
Either of the mage classess can work, but the lower levels leave them as haku-bait. Takes till about level 50 or so for them to become the forces that shatter armies. Even then, mobs and bosses give them trouble. Not the best for soloing, but possible with work.
Personally, I'm building up a "jack-of-all-trades" right now. Currently level 47 in all 4 classes. I've kept her that way from the beginning (give or take a few levels here and there), and have soloed her completely. No pets and no NPC's (except to pick them up to do the side quests, then drop them again. They never fight, I tell them to wait and only bring them to where I need them via teleport spell). I found being able to use any item at all, gives one many many many options.
So really, while not all classes are equal, neither are the players. I advise taking a class and race you like to play and have fun playing and go with that. Devise (or ask for advice on) tactics for that design. But if it's not fun for you, then it's not a good design.

FIGHTERS are good because their large amounts of health and armour give them a good survival rate and prevents them for having a monster-induced sleep all the time.besides it's great to have a tank.
RANGERS can have nearly as much AC as fighters and due to not needing mana are almost the ultimate solo class because of their hit-and-run qualities.
NATURE MAGES are generally too weak to make good soloers but their heals,buffs and summons can make them work if you patience.
COMBAT MAGES can be very powerful but the combination of spells that can go through walls and/or hit multiple foes,powers like Corrosive Eruption,and their very low health mean you have to use a lot of tactics to make them work.

Once again, it depends on how far you're willing to go with the play. Just like in majority of RPGs fighters tend to be the newbie-friendly character at the beginning allowing to do some serious buttkicking, but down the line mages takes the lead (except DS I, where rangers simply pwnd P). I mean, if you just tend to play the game through once and quit after killing Valdis (or the mage, if BW) then fighter, if you continue... (read following )
I'd personally like to know, what class is the best for the hardest difficulty level. Fighter (and ranger?) seems to own the mercenary level, but what about the other two (elite and...)? All in the context of a solo play, of course.
I guess, there is a side issue with the game type as well (original or BW) I still didn't get my BW (which makes me sad... ), so can't tell. But there are two mix classes, which weren't discussed here, alas would be nice to hear the ideas about these two as well.
Btw, I like the 4-suit-idea, but not for my brains. =)

i am going solo with fighter(90)/combat mage(83)...just remember that the key words for survival in solo (or not) is to acquire items that grant health/mana regenerations; health/mana stealth as many as possibe. you will be surprise how much those could help you last long in battle. (almost invincible, no more potionaholic). the good example is set items : undying warlock.
for combat mage, the major concern is to raise damage as much as possible: intelligent has it limit (like my case, a multi class with low intel), and slow; try to search item that give +% to combat magic.
high strength/or intel only make you feel strong; but it play so little in determ ine damage. a good melee can make it up for the lost.
finally, don worry about the drops on certain atribute while trains on the others; that is just normal. (i have my str drops for 10+, while my combat magic raised from 75 to 83). thanks,

Death Magic, its the first one i tried and carried it all the way through. The first few acts will be hard but you will toughen up and learn how to spread your points to become a tank of a mage. Your life stealing will keep you alive more then anything until you dont even need it. Like any mage, just switch to another element if you encounter something resistant. Remember to train nature magic for buffs. Try too not hit and run too much, you need to find your weaknesses to build from them. With the right mix of gear and skills you'll have high health, high armor, high resistances to everything, high life/mana stealing, and only slightly less then max potential CM damage.
