Excuse me being a bit vague here but I am at the office. I have explored most of the map. The only places left to enter are the Tower (Durlag?) Candlekeep, Uhlgoths Beard? (right at the top of the map), and there are still a few quests to do in BG city (e.g. sewers).
Most of my party are lvl 6/7. After solving a puzzle re the Iron Thron for the Flaming Fist I got sent straight to Candlekeep. Should I accept this or move on to other areas, (I have avoided the tower as some posts say lvl 6 is pushing it, also does Uhlgoths Beard get me sent somwhere (I think I read about a trip on a post??)
Thanks
What next?

Go to Ulgoth's beard. From there you will be able to do some nice quests. Shandalar's cloak, werewolf island and durlag's tower to name just a few.
I would suggest you don't go to Durlag's tower directly. It's best going after you talk to a person in Ulgoth's Beard.
After this, you should have some more experience which you'll need in the end battle.
Besides, exploring the remaining quests is part of the game! Enjoy it and happy hunting!

Cartoon Law III
Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the speciality of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.

Like Vehemence says, talk to someone in Ulgoth's Beard before heading to Durlag's Tower. I've done the tower with a level 6/7 party, so it's doable.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

I actually did Durlag's Tower without disarming a single trap. Dualled Imoen to Transmuter before she got a decent Find/Remove Traps... Wasn't too much of a problem, though. Just have your Cleric cast Find Traps and have someone with the Boots of Grounding and a bunch of Hit Points trigger those annoying Lightning Bolt traps.
