Unsaving a Game

Post by R.Carter »

I just finished playing through LoD for the first time (I was deep into NWN when DII first hit, and only loaded it up a couple of weeks ago out of sheer boredom).

Silly me walked through the portal that Tyriel opens up after I whacked Baal, not realizing that that would trigger the final ending of the game. This is a bummer because I had yet to claim the extra socket and personalized weapon from some Act 5 quests, and had yet to do the Cow Level. I also left a couple of set items on the ground. Bummer.

Is there a way to unsave, or will I have to go through Nightmare before I get a chance to finally see the Cows?

Thanks!

Don't worry! Diablo don't have savegames in the same way as games like NWN has. Once you've completed a part of the game, you can go back to that or prior parts at any time and replay it or, like in your case, use the quest rewards. Just open a game. When you've finished Normal and choose open game, the game will automatically choose Nightmare for you. Just click Normal instead, open a game and you're back in Normal. Btw, you need to be in Normal to do the Normal cows, you can only do the cow level after you completed a difficulty level.

For socketing of items, it's best to wait until you find a good item you want to socket. Usually that means when you're in Hell. I always save the socketing for items that I plan to use as endgame equipment for my chars, which means I may go back to Normal to socket a high level item I found in act 5 at Hell difficulty.

Thanks for the help!

I did start a normal game, and panicked as I started up in the Rouge's Camp again instead of Harrogath. I had to start Family Time so I didn't check out the situation completely.

Let me see if I get what you are saying:

I can save the extra slot that I earned in a Novice game until I claim it by taking the same character back into the same Novice game? My Stash remains constant throughout all of the difficulties?

Thanks for the help again! This is why I came back. GB still rules the net for computer gaming help.

It doesn't matter where in the game you start, since you can go anywhere using the waypoints. When you stand on a waypoint, you see tabs for each of the five acts, and under each tab, the waypoints you have previously taken will be white. If you missed a waypoint, it will be greyed out.

Your understanding is absolutely correct. Let's say you find a nice item with character A at Hell difficulty. You can then quit your Hell game, start a Normal game with A and use the waypoints to go to Harrogath and socket your item at Larzuk's shop.

Your stash and inventory, for each character you create, remains constant over the game regardless of difficulty level. Items dropped on the ground will however disappear forever when you quit a game. Even within the same game, items on the ground will disappear after a while so don't leave anything you want!

Thanks for the spot on help. Yeah, its a bummer that I lost a couple of set items and some other stuff, but whatever. I had a blast with the cows last night. I've waited since D I to go through the cows. Unfortunately, a power outage cut it short taking a Bramble armor I had made away. I'd like a bigger stash...

On a semi-related note: is going back to other difficulty levels how you would score a 6 slotted item or do those have a chance of dropping on higher levels?

You made a Bramble armour? Where on earth did you get the runes from, it requires Ral, Ohm, Sur, Eth. Ohm and Sur are very high level runes that can only be found at Hell difficulty and even so, very, very rarely. Did you trade for the runes?

Regarding slots, or sockets as they are called, you can find items with 6 sockets also at Normal. All items are divided into three levels, normal, exceptional and elite, and the quality of items will improve as the difficulty level increases. If you want to make a runeword with high level runes, it's of course better to make it in a higher quality item.

I loaded DII/LoD out of the Battle Chest. I believe it was v1.07. I followed the recipe in the strategy book that comes with it. It only called for 2 runes. I want to say that they were Eth and Ral to be specific. I put them on a 2 socket suit of Scale Mail I think. It sure said Bramble right on it when I was done. When I get home this evening I'll check to make sure that it was those 2 runes. I'll post the specs too. I think it gave life and mana steal, fast walk/run, some defense bonus and some resistances. I thought it was pretty nice armor to have early in the game.

I have since come up to the current patch from BNet as of last night (1.12). I was thinking about trying to make another one with some better base armor. But if the recipe changed with the patch, oh well.

I am only playing single player because I am an online gaming addict. I remember enough item trading/duping silliness from Diablo I to want to get involved with it in DII.

Heh, I had actually forgotten the 1.07 runewords! But yes, Ral Eth made Bramble back then!

The duping only got worse with all the rare high runes and totally crazy runewords. I don't trade at all any more, I just play online with friends in closed games.
