Touch attack and ranged attack spells

Post by mr_sir »

Does anyone know which stats affect the attack rolls for touch attack and ranged attack spells? I'm planning to roleplay a necromancer, but whenever I make a character, I just seem to miss constantly on touch attack and ranged attack necromancy spells during the start of Act 1. This kind of makes the style of play a bit pointless.

What would be the best way of making an arcane caster effective when using touch attacks? (please note, I'm going for a palemaster build and do not want to take any cleric levels if I can help it so I'm pretty much stuck with the low attack bonus that wizards have each level)

I think melee touch attacks and ranged touch attacks are calculated roughly the same as regular melee and ranged attacks, and so use strength and dexterity respectively. You can take a weapon focus in touch attacks to help you out.

Sir Edmund: "Should you obey the lord who asks you to put a village of innocents to the torch? Is that chivalrous? Is it noble?"
Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

swcarter is right... you need good str or dex depending what you use.. the good thing is touch attacks bypass several armour

The attack calculations are wildly different for these attacks (..because they rid you of most forms of AC blocking the attack). The net result is that you often are rather poor at making these attacks until at higher levels. Early-on, you are really pretty bad without any modification because of the pitiful BAB.

Deflection, Dodge, and Dexterity AC bonuses are the problem (in conjunction with a natural "10" to begin with).:

Touch attack - NWN2Wiki, the Neverwinter Nights 2 wiki - Races, classes, skills, and more

Don't forget that you have True Strike, which should do it for everything, but is tedious. (..you also have the "heroism" spells, and the 3rd level version can be persisted).

Also note that having the appropriate enhanced weapon in hand will confer a touch attack bonus:

Ranged: Dart or Shurkien with an attack or enhancement bonus.
Melee: any Melee Weapon with an attack or enhancement bonus.

Don't forget the feats: Weapon Focus (), and Improved Critical ()

You of course can also increase your BAB with the EK class and to a lesser extent with the Harper class.
