Inspirational Fictional Characters

In another thread Galraen and Fljotsdale mentioned Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and in particular [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granny_Weatherwax"]Granny Weatherwax.[/url]

Now, it just so happens I really love that character. In fact, she's practically a role model for when I get old...

So, I'm inspired to create this thread.. Taking into account that clearly fiction and real life are two very different realms, which fictional characters do you like enough that you wouldn't mind somewhat resembling them in at least some small way?

Please provide links so we can easily find the "person" you are referring to, quotes would be great too. The character(s) you choose can derive from books, movies, TV series or games.

Granny Weatherwax has to be one of my favourites as well, but I have another Pratchett char I like just as well... Tiffany Aching. Hang about while I find a link... here we are:

She's great. Her main weapon is a heavy frying pan, with which she has no hesitation in whacking magical nasties. She's a kind of junior Granny Weatherwax - you can envision her growing up to be just like Granny.

I'm an established Pratchett fan... His female characters are a breath of fresh air among all the "Oh James, save me, while i stand here looking helplessly sexy, and then I'll go to bed with you!" standards we get from everywhere else...
Another fictional character i find important is [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snufkin"]Snufkin.[/url] Especially his inner calm, love for outdoors and ability to just be alone and quiet.

Everywhere else? Try reading the Daughter of Empire and you'll find one of my all time favourite characters, and one of the most inspirational ever; Mara of the Acoma. If you want a strong female character look no further.

And I've always loved the Moomins!

Though I have to admit I haven't read any since my kids were little... my favourite was the little hooded guy with the raven. Can't remember his name but he reminds me of Odin. At least I THINK he was in the Moomins...

Okay, so i was being slightly pessimistically hyperbolic

I'll definetely try to read what you're recommending, but it may be hard to get here, as i've never even heard of the book. But hey, never say die.

@Dragon Weatherwax, what parts of granny's personality do you find role-modeling? The firm conviction you're the best in what you do, or the belief that 'emancipation' is a feminine problem not to be mentionned around men? :laugh:

Daughter of the Empire is actually the first book of a trilogy Quengalad, continued in Servan of the Empire and finished in Mistress of the Empire.

They are a spin-off from Raymond Feist's Riftwar Saga, but IMHO are much better than the books in that saga.

You should be able to get them through Amazon if nowhere else.

Also from Disworld: Sam Vimes, because he has such a sense of justice and doing the right thing. (Which, despite him being a cop, doesn't alwyas equate with following the law.)

To a lesser degree: Vetinari's sheer intellect and cynism by which he rules Ankh-Morpork, and the fact that he, in fact, has the wellbeing of his city in mind.
