I'm wondering how you make gold?
Not in the general sense, but how do some of you posters accumulate so much? I buy no gear from vendors, just lyrium dust, flasks, odd recipes for lyrium potions and healing potions. I sell everything I get unless it's an upgrade for one of my characters.
Yet I am always floating below 10g at best and see no way to acquire the funds to buy some of the top end gear (saw one staff for like 192g).
Anyway, just curious. I do all the chanters board stuff, mage's collective, the warrior group. Obviously I'm missing something.
Gold
In a recent playthrough, by the time I go to the Landsmeet I'd accumulated over 900g, which I spent mostly on gear and tomes.
Do every quest. Sell every item you don't use (I use the same four characters all game, so don't equip anyone else).
Don't bother giving items to the emmisaries, just sell them. The xp they give isn't worth it.
I don't really buy crafting components unless it's for a quest.
Stealing can be a good source, although I really think it's only worthwhile stealing from yellow or orange named npcs.
Other that these suggestions there's no secret to it. Be frugal!

Don't think you know all the answers.
I've never had more than 100g at a time, but I missed a lot of opportunities (like the gold from Jammer's stash) and made mistakes (like buying expensive gear only to have something better drop). If I had a 'perfect' run through - buying only necessities and looting everything, demanding all rewards, I could easily see having over 150g by mid-game. I've got a belt that improves monetary gain, though, so I don't know how dramatic of an impact that has.
It sounds like maybe you're losing money on herbal components, especially if you're spending money on concentrator or distillation agents. See if you can manage to reduce the amount of potions you need to chug.

I always spend gold on herbal components, in Elfroot in particular, for making Lesser Health Poultices, and even then, I have a few hundred gold by the end of the game. You should see your money increase significantly after the second or third story mission.
Personally, I do all side-quests and sell what I can, without using the aforementioned belt.
Orzamar is probably the best place to make money, though also the longest chain.

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”
The belt doesn't offer enough benefit to out way the annoyance of equipping and un-equipping.
The single best money maker is tied to a "quest".
minor SPOILER:
Precious Metals - The Dragon Age Wiki - Dragon Age, characters, creatures, and more
This quest needs several things to get the most from it. Your main character needs a high coercion skill, you need to have a high pickpocket character with stealth, you need to effectively finish the entire Circle of Mages quest (in favor of the mages), and finally you need a fair bit of gold (40 gp). Note that there are other limitations as well listed in the spoiler.
You can start this by pickpocketing 30 gp from Rogek right from the start. Then you can eventually add-on as much as 58 gp + a crow dagger for the quest itself. That puts you at about 90 gp for not much effort.
The single biggest "drop" in the game is from defeating the (optional) High Dragon near the "Urn of Sacred Ashes" quest. If you sell all the equipment there you should have at least 30 gp.
The highest *beginning gp* is "side quest" available only to the Dwarf Noble origin. Obtaining a 100 gp note and immediately selling it for 20-25 gp (..can't remember the exact figure). You can even "extort" a couple gp more in that origin.

Just bringing this up again...doing a replay finally and I've done the Circle of Magi, Redcliffe and just starting Orzammar. I've got about 50g and would have closer to 100g if not for buying a few of the books that up your skills. The item I'm looking at is an off-hand "The Roses' Thorn" referenced in the Arcane Warrior thread which is what I'm playing. It's like 168g to buy and I'm nowhere close to that even looking at doubling my money by endgame...are some of these expensive items only to be used short term at the endgame ?
Spoiler
like when you are facing Loghain at the end
One thing that wasn't mentioned in the post above yours Ragin Cajun, or the page he linked to, is that there is a glitch in the Precious Metals quest that allows you to sell the lyrium to Godwin again, and again and again .......ad infinitum.
I can't remember the exact sequence of the dialogue, but it involved turning down the offer of 65 plus a dagger and keeping the Lyrium. then initiating conversation with Godwin again and selling the Lyrium for 60 (he never repeated the 65 + dagger offer). Complete the transaction and then restart a convo etc..
There is an error in the page linked to regarding turning Godwin in to Greagoir. Another time I approached Godwin to sell him the Lyrium I made the mistake of having the half wit (Alistair) with me. As I was playing a female bent on becoming Queen of Ferelden on this occasion, rather than risk offending dumbo I did turn Godwin in, and Greagoir does in fact have a dialogue option to do this. Presumably the person writing that article had the misfortune to play the game on a console rather than a PC.
