New Game/Character Creation *Glitch*

Post by Kalkriese »

Ok, after installing Icewind Dale (and the Latest Patch), and going through the first character creation for my initial mob.... I get the the point of entering my characters name and lo and behold, it won't let me..... :speech:

I mean I have keyboard control everywhere else with no luck at that particular point........ And the SAME thing happens after installing Baldurs Gate.... get all the way through the creation of the first character and cannot name them...... !!!!! HELP Please !!!???? I am running a 2 GHz, Win XP Pro box (SP2). Any pointers at all ??? My game CD's are in good shape too. I cannot recall ever having this sort of problem before, but I sure have it now..... Anyway, thanks ahead of time for any help in this situation......

The only thing I could think of: are you, by chance, multilingual? Are you using an English/US version of the game? What's the default language on your PC? I'm asking, because IWD might not be able to recognize/display some symbols (like Japanese, Arabic or Cyrilic). However, I just tried with Bulgarian and German output and the game displayed standard latin symbols (i.e. no cyrillic letters; no umlauts), so chances are, my guess is wrong.

I use XP Service Pack 2 and I've had no problems so far, so you might be facing some rare and obscure bug.

OK.. the fact that you are having trouble with two older infinity engine games points to your computer and not the actual installs. I'm no tech expert, but that makes sense to me anyway.

So... what are your exact computer specs?

That you are running XP Pro should make this easier.. so that strikes me as odd. I have XP Pro along with SP2 and I have no trouble at all.

Is it perhaps something related to your graphics card? How old is your computer? Maybe all of that information can help us pinpoint what's going on.

Also, some people have reported lots of luck in running BG with Windows 7. Obviously, there's no way of knowing if it would work for you, so there's no point in taking that plunge until you're ready to for more general reasons. It's a thought though.

If you don't get any replies here I'll probably move this thread to our Tech Support forum with a redirect.

Cannot Name new characters (IWD)

To answer some questions here, I'm not bi-lingual and I am using plain 'ol english. I am running XP Pro (SP2) on an Intel P4, 2 GHz machine w/ NVidia 6200 series video card. Moving this to Tech Support may well be a good idea regardless, as I am going to maintain this box, but have a Dual 3.46 Intel box on its way from CyberPC. Should be here in about a week. (Win 7 Pro). Do appreciate the help and curiosity is killing me in this deal... lol... So please don't delete this msg.

Unable to enter character name during character creation

Well, after I made my posts here last evening, I got figure out the problem. I run Comodo CIS, and with version 4.* it includes a "Sandbox" feature. I looked into the contents of the Sandbox and lo and behold a couple files from IWD had been Sand-boxed, I removed them and then went further and disabled the app altogether and attempted the process of creating my first characters. Had no problem what so ever. I SHOULD HAVE, but didn't record the file names that were Sand-boxed. However, I'd just suggest that anyone that experiences this same problem, just go ahead and either disable or temporarily shut down your defense suite and carry on with the process. Once again I'd like to thank Dragon Wench and Majorman for their willingness to help !!!!! :)
