The Walkthru here says the ones inside the keep proper don't come under attack. Actually, they do. Especially when there are emessaries around. I keep failing this quest because of this, and missing the one in the first closet......

Same case here. Either way, all you can do is to rush in, kill any enemy ganging up on the survivor(s) and hope for the best. The 'War Cry' talent for champions can push enemies away especially when maxed out (any talent that can push away enemies), giving you some much needed time to save the survivor(s).
