Really slow on Vista 64

Post by LegioCorvus »

So, having finished Vampire - Bloodlines recently, I decided to visit another old favorite, Planescape - Torment, except the game is apparently incompatible with Vista 64. I've been crawling the internet for hours, trying fix after fix, and installing the game several times, only to be met with the same problem: The game slows down like crazy, especially if I highlight something with the mouse.

As for why I feel this shouldn't be happening:
1) My specs are strong. Newer dual-core, 4 GB Ram, Nvidia 9800, etc. I've yet to have a game not run well on this rig.

2) I have Baldur's Gate 1 (Tutu) & 2: SoA installed, and both were played recently with absolutely no problems.

3) My older, under-powered Vista 32 machine ran the game perfectly.

Things I have tried:
a) Full install & play from disc
b) Widescreen mod
c) WeiDu fixpack
d) Nvidia_DirectDraw fix
e) Removing hardware mirroring, etc.
f) Changing the following

Maximum Frame Rate=30
Translucent Shadows=0
SoftSrcKeyBltFast=1
SoftBltFast=1
SoftSrcKeyBlt=1
SoftBlt=1
SoftMirrorBlt=1

g) Any combinations of the above

It is seriously frustrating me. Having played the opening of the game several times now, I really want to play through the rest of it again. Is there no hope for Vista 64 users?

Alright, got it to work!

That only took... a lot of trail and error. :laugh:

So what worked for me was full install, patches, tweaks, unfinished business, widescreen mod, new UI, nvidia_fix, and only making the following changes to the Torment.ini =

CacheSize=1
PathSearchNodes=32000
MaximumFrameRate=40

Yeesh. What we have to go through to get some of our favorite games to work on new systems...
