Elder Scrolls question
My issue with the entire Elder Scrolls line is that the game always appeared to be too advanced for my computer which led to the game usually sitting on my bookshelf (or falling behind my computer desk) for a couple of years until I upgraded my computer (or bought a new one).
I have fond memories of The Arena Scrolls (wish I could get that to work on Vista..lol)
Daggerfall sucked (to me) as the maps were horrible and I could not find my way out of the first dungeon and never played it again.
Didn't buy Redguard.
Have Morrowind, but honestly don't remember if I ever tried to play it..lol.
Oblivion: Playing now and enjoying once I got past the leveling issue with the help of the gang here on GB.
Question for those of you that played Morrowind and Oblivion. Which do you prefer and why? I actually got a hair today and went digging in my old games box and found Morrowind. Before I install it and get sidetracked from Oblivion, just wondering what others' thoughts on the MW game are.

In short : Oblivion is one of the worst games ever in my opinion, because it is so much WORSE than Morrowind, that it lies beyond understanding

Morrowind, absolutely without a shadow of a doubt. I enjoyed Oblivion at first, but it got very old very fast. the main questline in Oblivion, and the sidequests (with the exception of Dark Brotherhood which was fun) lacked imagination and were extremely predictible and/or uninteresting. the dungeons were also extremely repetitive, especially the Oblivion portals and I really hated what they did with the interface, especially trading and persuading (not only was it badly designed it didn't even make sense at all)
Morrowind had it's flaws but managed to shine despite them. but Morrowind also had the advantage that it wasn't caught in the shadow of, well, Morrowind
I'll also add that Redguard is worth playing, although much shorter and more linear than Morrowind or Oblivion, it's got a good story, some fun puzzles and is really a lot of fun

I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me

Morrowind in my mind is the best role playing game ever made. the world of Vvanderfell is unlike that of any RPG world and the possibilities in the game are absolutely endless, play it now!
that said i didnt hate Oblivion (unlike many MW fans), it just wasnt as inspiring as morrowind. However it did a couple of things right, the weapon designs were a lot nicer, the addition of Akaviri weapons were nice, i play as a samurai class (self created) so having a katana that actually looks like a katana is a big plus for me. the combat was well done, the environment was pretty, albeit unoriginal. Games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 are great if they are treated as action sandbox games, but not so much as actual RPGs.

The way i see it only one thing is for sure in this world......every living thing must die at some point
"the quest got boring cus there was no puzzes"
Not sure what you mean by this, is was supposed to be an RPG not a puzzle game.

No offense intended, but you may find that on this board more people will reply to your posts if you write in a clear manner. We're an old and crusty bunch here, and requiring us to bring out the reading spectacles and The Dictionary of New Fangled Words makes us even more grumpy than we already are..nawasaki22 wrote:i agree fully the enviorment was good but it just didnt keep me in to it the quest got boring cus there was no puzzes, also Fallout 3 is a good all around game but only as a sand box game other then that it doesnt rlly count as a RPG game

Morrowind is the better game, without a doubt.
I never really understood why people always go on about the thieves guild questline and the darkbrotherhood quests when it comes to oblivion. They weren't that fun and ridiciously easy. The sneak system just isn't well enough designed. Thieves guild quest were often boring (except the last quest which really was good, especially when playing it with oscuro) and the same goes for brotherhood quests. They were better than the other quests, but that isn't saying alot. Oblivion really doesn't have that much great quests.
Speaking of oscuro... It really renews the game and really makes it fun to wander around the land. Fights finally need some planning. Oblivion vanilla is pretty stupid, though i admit i first had a lot of fun with it. But once you realize it's true nature, you quickly become annoyed with it.
I did like shivering ilse a bit more than oblivion and this was even without oscuro installed. Should try to do it again with oscuro installed.
I also don't think you can really compare fallout 3 with oblivion. I thought Fallout 3 was a lot of fun and I return to it often. With the wanderer mod installed, it is a fantastic game (and i mean FANTASTIC).
To be fair, morrowind had a lot of problems too. But I just didn't notice them as much as in Oblivion.
Plus: oblivion is way too shiny and the grass is way too green.

Unmodded: Morrowind
Modded: Morrowind/Oblivion, with Morrowind winning just barely.
I take an almost greater value to core mechanics these days, because that's one of the easier things for a developer not to mess up. If you look at it that way, Oblivion took a few lessons from Morrowind. Little things like not having to re-haggle every trade you make. Or being able to jump over a fence without getting stuck mid-air. Oblivion is just a bit of a slicker game. In story telling and immersion, Oblivion loses. But then, I haven't been satisfied with *any* game on those accounts in a long time, so I'm just going to overlook that.

First played Oblivion myself and enjoyed it. Also installed Knights of the Nine and the other DLC's and Shivering Isles, together with some little mods.
In the meantime i bought the Goty of Morrowind (including tribunal and bloodmoon) and started to play that a bit. Morrowind has a slow start, it really needs time to build things up. Oblivion takes you by the hand from the start.
While Morrowind can be difficult at the beginning, especially if you come from Oblivion, i enjoy Morrowind more then Oblivion. Oblivion is fun for a while, but then it starts to get bored. It's too easy and too short and there are less posibilities. There are actually 4 factions and you can join the arena and that's it. I also hate it that the story is directly reveiled (close the obliviongates and stop mehrunes dagon) Morrowind on the other hand has alot of possibilities and options. More factions, more weapons and armors and quite more quests. It also doesn't take you by the hand. No, as soon as you leave the census & excise office and you stand in Seyda Neen then see for yourself. No direction markers, no journal which say what to do. Nope, you're on your own. And your character is also very weak at the beginning; you walk as fast as a turtle and can hardly defeat a mudcrab. That building up and the self exploring is the best part, together with the tons of options. The story is also building up. The only thing you know at the start is that you have been released from the imperial prision, shipped to Morrowind on the emperor's orders and now you stand in a little village with a package in your pocket for a certain caius cosades who lives in an other place. Oh and those cliffracers, you gotta love them
Oblivion isn't that bad. There are certain things which i like about it, like the ayleid ruins and especially the expansion Shivering Isles. But it feels like a casual game.

Morrowind and Oblivion are overall pretty much the same game.
Overall Morrowind is probably more fun. You have really great features like Levitation in it.
Oblivion is smaller, but of course has much better graphics.
Personally I cant be bothered with the Elder Scrolls rulesystem any more. I get the best mods, make me some good gear (sword and robe), use the console to level up my character, then I put it all together and explore the world.
In Morrowind I did all that by hand - it was extremely painful.

Just really started to sink myself into Oblivion, and the leveling system just irks me. Beyond that, the caves/mines/etc all fell into such a lazy pattern that I almost always knew what to expect when I went dungeon diving.
And, I'm sorry, but casting Minor Respite 28125382634 times to raise my Restoration skill 1 point?
Never. Again.
I still think the games alright, though, but Morrowind=winrar.
