So I tend to play caster classes. But I used to just stick to pure classes. Now I'm curious to try some multi class fun.
I've read some guys and narrowed it down to two classes I want to try. But I need some help to narrow it down.
I'm between a Cleric/Ranger and a Cleric/Mage
The problem I see with Cleric/Ranger is that I'm stuck with being good aligned, and that limits my selection of good fighters. I mean I get to have Keldorn for some Carsomyr action, but no really solid second fighter. Mazzy is specced more as an Archer then a fighter and Minsk, while fun is not a good frontline tank since he can't wear Full Plate armor. In addition to that I get no good pure mage. I'm stuck with Nalia until I get Imoen.
If I go with Cleric/Mage, I can go evil or Neutral. Then I got Edwin, who is the best NPC mage, I got Korgan and then later on Sarevok as two solid fighters
So help me out which should I choose
Help me choose a new char
Even from a RP perspective I don't think you have to be evil to bring along the evil NPCs. You can drag Korgan on your good crusade with him kicking and cursing all the way but as long as he is getting his fair share of the loot, and you are accomplishing your goals then everyone is happy.
As for what class both are awesome but there is already a cleric/mage in the game (and an elf at that). Why not make the C/R and bring Aerie along as well.
Also by being a C/R you are already one tank ahead from the start. Add Sarevok (Spoiler:) and you have just as many tanks. I think C/R, Keldorn, Minsc, Aerie, Edwin, and Sarevok would be an awesome party, and I don't think any of them will kill each other (don't quote me on that Keldorn and Edwin may get into it).

who you can convert to good in TOB through dialog
Hi! First, about your companions. Minsc, and all pure rangers for that matter, may wear any armour - even Full Plate. The only difference is that, while wearing it, the ranger cannot use "Hide in Shadows", but pure rangers cannot backstab anyway, so it's not a big deal. So you'll be perfectly fine with Minsc and Keldorn in the party (just make shure Keldorn gets the Bracelets of Dexterity).
Mind that Mazzy is much better than you think - yes, she starts with ***** in Bows, but as a fighter she levels up much faster than Keldorn and Minsc and has a higher level cap. This means that she can get new proficiencies considerably faster and you can modify her as you like. Also, I find her innate abilities better than Minsc, and she has a higher dexterity score - and mind you, every point of AC counts. Her strength is lower, true, but there are many items to change that.
I can also reccomend Haer'Dalis or Jaheira. Haer is a blade and as such he can easily reach insane levels of AC AND he has some spell to back him up. If used carefully, he can outclass both Mazzy and Minsc. Jaheira, on the other hand is much more solid than it seems. She levels up slower, but once she gets to the higher levels she becomes really scary - especially if you have ToB, then she is able to learn both Fighter and Druid HLAs. Her biggest advantage is the Harm+Critical strike combo. Her stats are also good for a tank (as I said, strength is not an issue in this game). Her weapon selection might seem limitedd, but that's before she lays her hands on a decent club (Blackblood) or spear (Impaler). She has a serious downside, however, and that's her annoying persona. Some people just can bear her.
Finally, you have Anomen. He's a dual class, meaning he's stuck at fighter level 7. That's not as bad as it sound, but once he gets to ToB he won't be able to get fighter HLA. He also has a terricle Dex and since the Gauntlets of Dexterity are only one pair, he doesn,t pair up well with Keldorn. Also, he's more annoying than Jaheira.
Now, a few words abot the abovementioned multiclasses. Many people consider the Ranger/Cleric as one of the best, if not the best combo in the game. He gets both druidic and cleric spells and tops them with a solid fighter THAC0. He might seem limited weapon-wise, but that's before you give him FotA and the Defender of Easthaven. He also has free ** in Two-weapon fighting.
However, the mage/cleric offers the best of both worlds. He has what seems to be an endless spell list, allowing lots of combinations. He's potentially the most potent tank in every group when buffed correctly.
My advice is, if you want to test both multiclasses in the same run, start as a ranger/cleric and get Aerie in your party ASAP.

The choice of which stronghold you want is yours. If you want the ranger one, do the Umar Hills quest first...if you want the cleric one, do Cult of the Eyeless.
Cult of the Eyeless is pretty tough to do first. If you're like me and you try to finish the game without dying, you'll avoid CotE until just before you're ready to start Chapter 3. If you don't care, then by all means...smash your way through it with as many reloads as necessary.
Also, my cleric ranger was evil following the trials in hells. I wasn't about to sacrifice any character stats for NPCs, screw that. There were no problems either (i.e. consequences). Feel free to play the character as nasty as you want. I'd keep reputation hovering in the 10-12 point range though.
