Hello everyone.

Just today i've faced a horrible fact, that i've run out of RPGs to play.

So, kind people, what good RPG have i missed? (there can be quite a few to be honest, because im quite new to RPGs)

Let me narrow it down a bit.. Turn based or pausable RPGs that give you at least one chance to alter the storyline / change the ending.

The reason for "turn based or pausable" is - i simply cannot operate the laptop "mousepad" fast enough to play, for example : Deus Ex the way i would like to.

The ones that i tried were.. Baldurs gate series, Icewind dale series, NWN series, Planescape, Eye of the beholder, Exile series, Avernum series, ToEE (this could be the best game ever, if it wasnt so damn short, that you can't even call it a chapter.. ) fallout series, dungeon siege, KotOR series, Arcanum and Evil Islands (too dull) + quite possibly every tactical game with character upgrading (from x-com to JA)

Two more things :
- Dragon age wont work on my laptop.
- The game can be as old and as ugly as possible, but not text based. I have D&D for that.

I haven't played it myself, but I've seen many people who enjoy the games you've listed state that the Wizardry series is worth it.
Wizardry 8, in particular, is supposed to be very good.

The Ultima series is good too.

Since your laptop can't run DAO, this probably won't work for you either, but I also really enjoyed The Witcher.

As well as the Wizardry series (from 6 onwards) I'd also suggest Might & Magic. I never did play 1, but have played all the rest. The peak for me was M&M 6, an absolute must in my opinion.

Also check out Good Old Games, they have some really good ones, and (if Buck doesn't mind too much) Abandonia, some really good oldies available for download there.

One of the series I'd recommend on GOG is the Ishar Compilation

On the tactical side, you could try out games like Heroes of Might and Magic, Disciples, Fallout Tactics, and Silent Storm.

Been there, done that For all tactical fans there is Age of Wonders too. Esp the first one. A turn based strategy game with 6 differend endings, awesome magic system and high chances of winning an impossible encounter simply by using better tactics! Number 2 and shadow magic are a step backwards.

..And I'm pretty sure there are even more threads asking this question...

Anyway. thank you all for swift responses. I have heard about all 3 : Ultima, Wizardy and M&M, but haven't played them yet. It seems that now is the time to right this wrongs

lionheart legacy of the crusader (falloutISH game, great setting not that great game but still nice and playeble) from blackisle

nox (more akin to diablo than an actual RPG)

realms of arkania (yes that beats )

kings of dragon pass a hybrid between strategy and role playing great game

vampire the masquerade (Ive never considerer it a rpg but some people do so you might as well look at ti )

those are the ones I can think off for now

Would help if we knew the specs of your Laptop or at least it's age (as good a guide as any!) I know you said Neverwinter Nights series, but NWN really doesn't require a rocket powered machine to run (used to play it on my Acer laptop (Windows XP home, 2GB RAM, 128 MB Mobility Radeon 600, 2 GHz Centrino single core) It does however hate Vista! Even though the vanilla game is pretty dull, there are thousands of mods that can fulfill almost every RPG itch you might have, from sandbox style to tactical, to multiplayer and the community is very much alive (cause everyone hates the NWN2 toolset!)

Hmmm, might revisit after I finish going through BG series...

Sacred was pretty fun... Kings Bounty... Drakensang (but might be a push to run it) I loved Arcanum... I have only heard good things about Betrayal at Krondor available on GOG, they also have Vampire Masquerade: Redemption.

I played NWN on the stationary PC, which is capable of running every game that i know off (1 year ago it was the high-end PC).

However, due to constant traveling across 'ze europe' i have to use the laptop most of the time. It has a x300 radeon (i believe!) with an athlon (or sempron) 2200 and only 512 ram. It "runs" like a mule for sure.

As i said, i'll try Wizardy 8 and M&M6 for now. Thanks once again everyone

If you wanted to go back further, then M&M3 and Wizardry 6 are not too dissimilar to the old Eye of the Beholder games.

I looked at the required ability to pause, and I have to agree that the Might & Magic games had it by using the Enter key in the #6 to #8 games. For the earlier ones, there is no time limit to move, take turns in combat, or think about strategies to get past an area.

Good Old Games has the MM6 Limited Edition for $10, and you get MM1 thru MM6. That's an awesome buy, so feel free to get your money's worth. I can guarantee a few months or more for at least MM3 thru MM6.

I'd have a hard time recommending this game for anyone. It has such a great start to it, but once you get past New Barcelona(less then half way through the game) it just turns from a great RPG into a mediocre action-RPG.

If you get M&M 6 from GoG, you should definitely check out this thread before playing it. Paying particular attention to posts by DaveO.

I noticed the lack of the Wizardry series. Or you might want to go thru Ultima and some of its spinoffs. Just some alternatives to M&M.

Ultima 6 is fun, you can even kill civillians Elder Scrolls style.

id look into Nethack, its about as ugly as it gets graphics wise, but its still not a text based. There are so many things you can do in the game, from wiping your face, to kicking things, its all done with a keyboardso theres no mouse involved. Its supposed to be a 'hardcore rpg' allthough ive never considered myself a 'hardcore rpger' and i still love it. Oh yeah and the coolest part, its free!
