The most terrifying enemy in games?

Post by Stworca »

Greetings once again!

This time i'd like to ask you folks, which one of game (no matter what type) enemies did you find the biggest obstacle to overcome? Boss or regular grunt that attacks you in thousands, does not matter

My vote goes for... Remember the slimes in Icewind Dale 2 "Dragon's Eye" dungeon, that splitted into two every time you hit them? The easiest way to deal with those was to hurl a fireball or two
Imagine the slimes having more hp than you do when you encounter them, hitting like truck, beign absolutely immune to magic and all damage types except for good ol melee..

This is how Exile's "Doomguards" look like. At a mid point in the game, you're to destroy a shard that is holding two gates, that separate Giants from Trogs (both of them hate each other) and there is a single guardian, the doomguard. Knowing how big of a pain can this guy be, i rushed in with a single character and fled, to let giants and trogs take care of him. There were LOTS of giants and trogs

Doomguard starts with 150 hp.

After trog hit him twice.. for ONE damage each time.. There were 3 doomguards, with 149, 148, 148 hp... For those who do not know the ID slimes : Doomguard copy with 1 hp still hits just as fast and just as hard as the original one with 150hp.

The battle was over in 4 rounds. Doomguards did not lose a single unit. Doomguards charged me, remembering that there was a group of adventurers around. My warriors were dual weilding, both, with lots of attacks, but low damage (bless spells made it a bit better)

I waited in a choke point, with 2 warriors in front, 2 healers behind and 2 mages at the back. At 4 am, when i finally killed the last copy, of the last copy, of the last copy.. each one of my warriors was 15 levels higher than before we faced this one. (they started at level 18)

Doomguards.. And later on there's an encounter with 4 of those at once  another all nighter it seems.

Anyway : Let's hear it folks! Most terrifying enemy that you've encountered?

Don't kill me for talking about consoles but Dead Space had me creeped out the whole way through. I was in a position to play it without any distractions and 6.1 surround. No one particular boss, just getting zerged all the time when I least expected it.

As far as BG2, hands down the beholder den in the Underdark. Dark, surreal and just horrible amounts of pain within (keep in mind I refuse to use any of the cheese items that make you immune).

I know you are asking about 'toughest' battles but I'm more honing in on the title of your thread and the word "terrifying" specifically.

It's zombie carp. In dwarf fortress 40d the regular carp was overpowered for some reason, frequently resulting in the death of your fishermen. Even though the game featured more dangerous enemies than the zombie carp the abundance of carp and the terror felt the first time you realized that zombie carp could walk on land was quite something.

The acrobatic head-crab zombie in the Ravenholm stage of Half-Life 2 scared the heck out of me, not only because their howl but also for their speed, agility and ferocity. This was one of the reasons why I wanted to get out of that stage as quick as possible.

The other goes to the librarian in Metro 2033. Ape-like, tough to kill, packs a punch and uses holes in the ceiling to ambush you where you least expected. Pretty scary at times and kept you on your toes just to run to the next exit to escape from this fellow.
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

Des mentions two foes that scared the hell out of me :o

the librerian was by far the strongest enemy in metro 2033 for me.

the first time I encountered the Witch from left 4 dead had me on my toes
and in the second game where there is a whole level full of them *shrugs*

the zombies from thief 1, the second level where you had to go through an abandoned mine to get to a prison. from that game I gained the habbit to avoid/shoot corpses a few times before moving on.(good lesson to apply in dead space :D )

the first lich I encountered in baldurs gate 2, squashed my party to tiny bits in a round

arcanum the brute fang, those nasty wolf do a hell out of damage even to high level characters a couple of those dogs and your in trouble.
Have you seen my brain around here? No? well in case you see it its brainy and squishy looking. If you see it let me know

The beholder den is really awesome. But, when playing tactics for the first time, Ylich, and right after that, improved undead (all improved undead) still makes me think how crazy it was to play tactics.

Thief: Deadly Shadows The Cradle. If you think the Cradle doesn't count what with being a level, think again: (beware of spoilers) it really is so much more than that...

Nothing - nothing - has ever scared me as much as playing through the freaking Cradle, and I very much doubt I'll ever be able to do it again.

I forgot about that. Yes, no level ever quite scared me so much as that one. I am not sure if it was so much the enemies as the design of the place though. People rave on and on about the Ocean House Hotel from Vampire Bloodlines, but it never phased me. I had nightmares about Cradle. Nightmares! I need to play that game again.

My own answer is The Vortigaunt Behind the Orange Soda Machine (Halflife 1). You never saw him coming. There were other scary things in that game, but when you are a 20 meter tall alien with a sledgehammer for a nose, it is hard to be subtle. After The Vortigaunt Behind the Orange Soda Machine, nothing can catch out off-guard anymore. Ever.

I'll have to vote for the Cradle (in terms of enemies, I suppose, but mostly the atmosphere), though the first time venturing in the Ocean House Hotel did give me a fright
Spoiler
(although you fight no one there)
. The "fight" with the werewolf in Bloodlines still gives me a rush though. xD

The last battle of Watcher's Keep caught be completely off guard. It wasn't scary, but I definitely wasn't expecting that.

My vote would have to go to the 'enemies' from the Silent Hill series that you never see on screen, but only hear. Some of the specters in Fatal Frame were quite unnerving as well.... ok, they made me cry like a little girl :p

these little bastards!!!! they arent actually terrifiying as they are infuriating, they gang up on your character and drain your health in a split seconds, the only enemy that has ever had me pulling my hair out with rage.

as for terrifying goes:
Poison Headcrabs in half Life 2: not as much the looks of them but the sound they make,
Image

Scorpians from Daggerfall: there is one quest where you have to clear this guys house of scorpions, you go in there, and as soon as you turn a corner, giant scorpions everywhere!!! :speech:

I'm arachnophobic. You can probably imagine what does that mean for an enthousiastic gamer.

Curiously, BG spiders aren't scary at all. Probably something to do with the perspective and colours. NWN was bad enough, but if anyone here played Sacred, you'll understand it's not an exaggeration when I say it almost killed me.

Interesting you should say that. I've never been arachnophobic, but when I played Lord of the Rings Online for a while I actually began to develop a certain fear and loathing of spiders. :D Since then I've started to recoil slightly at the site of a harmless house spider.

I can't say I'm crazy about the spiders in Dragon Age either, though at least they aren't too numerous.

I've heard of lots of people being absolutely terrified of the spiders in System Shock 2. There was even a mod at some point that removed them.

Although I do not have a phobia about snakes, I do tend to give them a wide berth when outside and run into one.

In IWD 2, on the way to to the Shaengard bridge you enter a pass after finishing the logging camp. You run into some snakes as soon as you arrive on screen. There is just "something" about the way those snakes are animated that creeps me out. I really can't put a finger on it. It is not that they are particularly tough, they just give me the "willies", yeeesh!!
