I put BG 2 from old computer on to new computer and it asks if I want to install?

Yeah, I'm back. I've realized that BG 2 is probably the most awesomest game I've played so I'm gonna stick with it.

Anywho, got a new computer, and I put my files from my old computer on to new computer. (Put on portable harddrive, so on.)

But the problem is, BG 2 isn't working. It asks if I want to install.

Pretty much: Put all BG 2 files from computer on to portable harddrive. I put it on new computer, press the BG 2 start up thing and comes up with the thing to select what you want to do. But there's no play, just install and some other things.

It wouldn't be a problem to reinstall the game, but I've installed a fair bit of mods over the past of me playing BG 2. And I seriously don't want to download and install them again.

So, what's the problem? I really want to get back in it.

I'm not tech-savvy enough to offer a guaranteed solution and suspect it'll need a reinstall, but...

Are you on the same OS as your old computer? Note that some recent OSs ask for an auto-install with some games and you can just cancel it and use a desktop icon or Start menu shortcut to go into the game proper. My Lego Star Wars always tries auto-installing, but can be played with a start through the icon.
It strikes me as unlikely, but depending upon the mods you have, you may be able to get away with just copying your old override/sound/portrait etc files and pasting them in post-installation.
But the best suggestion I can offer is this: try to find all or some of the download files for the various mods in your downloads folder (or wherever you save them). I've modded my game a fair bit, but have kept the compressed download files so I could reinstall them if need be. Of course, if you deleted the compressed files this won't work for you.

The way it sounds to me is that you essentially copied the Baldur's Gate II directory and pasted it onto your hard-dive, am I correct?

If so, then you would need to re-install the game since yes, you copied the files, but there's nothing really linking them to the rest of the system, meaning that there are no registry keys on your new computer for the game.

I don't really use mods a lot, but I would assume that the game would either ignore the missing mod component or would give you an error message, without offering to install the game.

The game doesn't care about the registry keys, but the startup tool does.
Instead of using baldur.exe to start the game, use bgmain.exe directly. That will bring you directly to the full-screen game and you can play as usual. For convenience, you can just change the existing shortcut to point to bgmain.exe instead or create a new shortcut for it on your desktop.
To edit the game configuration, call bgconfig.exe in the same way.

I've been copying my game between different computers and different folders for years without ever running into problems. I'm currently playing it on a netbook that doesn't even have a physical CD drive. As far as I know, there are no mods that care about the registry keys, all they need to know is the BG2 installation directory.

Ahhhhh, I tried reinstalling, and I was too scared that BG won't work anymore so I pressed cancel, now Baldur.exe is gone! >=(

Could you tell me what to do Thrar? I click BGmain or whatever, but I'm not sure if I'm clicking the right one, it just says it cant find the proper... start up... exe thingo or whatever to start bgmain.exe up. Or has me reinstalling and canceling screwed it up? (I have Collector's Edition, when it said insert disc 1 I pressed cancel).
