(spoilers) New, confused about closing gates. Help?

Post by Jemcrystal »

On youtube I see the hero being asked by townsfolk to close the oblivion gate(s) and a quest line appears. In the wiki I read just find the crystal at the top of the main tower. So, which is it? Do I need or should get a quest to close the gate? Or do I just walk into every gate?

Also, do I follow the main quest line first or do I just close gates for a while then get back to the main quest?

I'm at the part where I followed a spy in the city, we killed someone following him, and he told me to go to some person, I don't remember I got bored. Figure the king's son is safe enough.

It's kind of a sandbox game, so you can get through the main quest first, or wait and do some side quests first. Your call. You don't need to be given a quest to complete it, either. In fact, one quest which cannot be given until level 20 can be completed at level 1. So just wandering into Oblivion gates and closing them should be fine (I'm not sure if any outside of Kvatch are quest-related, anyway).

This forum isn't quite dead. In fact, it could be getting better. It may just go for a walk. It feels happy. </Monty Python reference>

You don't need to close every single Oblivion Gate. Not unless you want to. Close the gates belonging to the Main Quest. These are the gates outside the major Cities - but beware of doing them without first speaking to the town ruler, who lives at each town's castle; there can be more than one Oblivion Gate outside a city, and if you close the wrong one you don't get the help from the town that you have to get to follow the Main Quest. But you won't be doing that for a while anyway, cos you haven't been given that particular job to do yet.

If you are unsure of what is your next quest on the Main Quest line, check your Quest list.

But I think you should be finding out where Baurus (your 'spy) is, and follow him to get the Main Quest moving again.

If you don't want to follow the Main Quest, you don't have to, but it's best not to trigger it if you don't want to do it, because all those ruddy gate popping up are apain in the neck - and since you already have triggered it, you may want to start over with another character.

I pop in here from time to time, and am willing to help as much as I can. I'll look in again tomorrow, ok?

Also, it's best not to finish the main quest if you like the realm of Oblivion (or like enchanting your gear with the powerful Sigil Stones), because once you do, all of the Oblivion gates close, and no more will open.
