Making enough money to buy better gear or make better swords is a tricky business. I try to take as many of the passive skills as quickly as possible to both make money and save money. As for the signs the only two that are needed for most of the game are Aard and Igni...
Monster Lore is good to have as some books are pricy, brewing potions, herbalism and bomb making are definately recommended, that way you can sell what potions/bombs you don't need. You can take the fist fighting talent, but most of the fist fights are so straightforward you can get away with leaving it out on easy/normal mode.
Group style and fast style are often more useful than strong. You can do damage to a strong oponent with fast style, it is simply less effective and takes longer to kill him, while strong style (to start with) is completely ineffective against fast opponents and suicidal against groups. Where you lack in sword talents you can usually make up for with potions. Thunderbolt and Blizzard are good at making up the shortfall... especially with group style.
Try to invest in fighting skills as evenly as possible and have a plan for how you want to focus your character in terms of signs and melee. By the end of the game you should have unlocked pretty much all Bronze talents, 50-60% of silver talents and a maybe 3-4 gold talents.
Hmmm... got the urge to play The Witcher again!

Two wrongs don't make a right... but three lefts do!

Try talking to everyone and finding out if and what they want, even if they are just some random nameless peon wandering around the streets. Sometimes they will give you things, like journal entries or books on the cheap, saving you money or allowing you to loot items much earlier than you would by hunting down the book which teaches the skill, often for just the cost of a morsel.
Knowledge is the key to making money in the Witcher. The faster you learn, the more you can loot, complete sidequests, and create potions that will make your game easier.

Strong style is also usefull, especially in the beginning. The boss of Act I is best being besieged with strong style. Same goes for Coccacidium in Act II, which doesn't go down with fast or group. Devourers and the like also won't go down other then with strong style. Actually you use strong more then fast. At least i did.Darth Gavinius wrote:

Don't waste any points on making bombs. They are of no use.
Other then that just invest in that of which you think you will use the most.
With my first play i invested alot in Aard in the beginning, resulted in being more a magic warrior instead of pure melee. Also used igni quite some times.
Things like plant lore is also you want to invest in. And read every single book. Some books are skill books and others you need to learn about, like info about monsters. Explore the area and talk with everyone. Sometimes there are npc's who have a task for you or have some other meanings.
