Once upon a Planescape...

Post by MindYerBeak »

Once upon a long, long time ago, veiled in the mists of time I purchased Planescape Torment. I played it, thoroughly enjoyed it, played it again, then shelved it and forgot about it. Then, for some strange reason, my interest was piqued again and I dug out my 4 disk beauty, installed it and am now playing like a man possessed.

It's surprising how much I forgot about the game; it's as if I'm a new player, knowing only that it's a game that provides a life experience to be enjoyed anew. I've missed out on the little things like finding a doorway in Ragpicker's Square, now so obvious. Anyone who hasn't played this game is missing out on one of life's great and rare experiences. Never having played this game will leave you wanting in the afterlife. Not playing a game that stirs the emotions rather than killing everything in sight will make you miss out on one of life's most cherished experiences, never to be improved upon. Think of your favourite film or book then multiply it by 100 and you end up with Planescape Torment. Never, ever again will such a masterpiece be made, such days are long gone, never to re-emerge.

That said I am having a few niggly problems. This is my PC setup:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
AMD Phenom II X4
Radeon 5900
64Gb SSD

I'm not bragging. Yes, it's a top of the range machine, but I run it to play Planescape Torment, which speaks volumes about the game. It beats DX11 games hands down.

One thing I found irritating about games way back then was the l-o-n-g loading times during area transitions. They were a pain, but we all had to live with them, having 5,400 rpm HDDs. However, with an SSD area transnissions are painless, almost immediate in some cases. I think 3 seconds is the longest I've had to wait. Coupled with 13 seconds to load Windows from start to finish makes this a must buy. A 60Gb SSD will hold windows and still have lots of room left over for games. They're coming down in price and a 64Gb version can be had for £100. Turf out your IDE drives and replace them with a single SSD. I promise you won't regret it. It's a pleasure to click on a new location and get there immediately.

As stated previously, I do have a glitch or two. The character animations are jerky and the mouse lags a little, making it a chore to click on things. If anyone has experienced this and found a solution I'd be grateful for a remedy.

Completely with you. If I could click my fingers and go back to the world of computers in 1999, I would. They don't make games anymore.
