how do you tell which is north south east or west. do you just guess that the top of the screen is north and bottom is south?

It's not a guess, top is north and bottom is south. Compare the minimap to your world map.

Now thanks to you moderator, its not a guess. I know there was a compass on the ship but I must of forgotten to pick it up. Am I able to go back to the ship? If not its not big deal. Ive only been in world for about 24 hr. Its pretty boring. I hope itll pick up. Im told it will.

You won't get back on that ship, if you mean the one at the start and where Jiub holds you company. Once you handed over your papers to Sellus Gravius and you have left the Census building the ship is gone for good.
You have no compass to pick up. You get a mini-map on the right of your screen and there is a bigger version in the menu (rightclick mousebutton)
