At first, I've only had three quick keys assignments and they worked perfectly, but when I added the fourth assignment, its frame in F1 menu turned red (see the attached pic) and I couldn't equip that item by pressing the assigned key. After that, any item or spell I've tried to assign acquired that red frame and couldn't be equipped with quick keys, although there were no problems equipping them from inventory/spells menu (and in that menu their frames were still blue). Is it a bug or am I doing something wrong?
My version of Morrowind is not patched and I have but a few mods installed:
Better Books
Clean Templar Pauldron Fix
Improved No Glow
Left Gloves
Magicka Regeneration (that based on both Intelligence and Willpower)
Roadmarkers
Hi-res Signposts
+ some textures
Searching the net didn't help a bit, but I'm sure someone else must have already encountered that thing and found a way to fix it.
Correction: spells do work through quick keys, but items of any kind do not, although they sure did work before.
Correction #2: I've unloaded all mods and cleaned Data Files folder from all foreign files and even replaced Morrowind.ini with its original version. Then I started a new game and once I was out of Census office I picked The Engraved Ring of Healing and tried to assign it to one of the quick keys. Guess what the result was – the same red frame. It doesn't appear randomly and it must mean something, but what?
F1 quick keys don't work
The problem solved, but only partially: it seems that Inventory Menu items aren't supposed to be assigned to quick keys (although some items still work this way, like books and notes), but Magic Menu items are assigned w/o any problems, and since enchanted items belong to both menus, doing it another way can help avoid that red frame.
You have to have the magic item EQUIPPED to use it afaik, that's why your bindings dont work. So you may need one binding to EQUIP the item, and ANOTHER one to use it. An official patch / tribunal / bloodmoon fixed that.
I may, however, be wrong, as i never bothered with too many cast on use magic items, due to staying simple.

All add-ons and patches are installed (current version 1.6.1820), but I still can't get not-magic items to work through F1 menu. Moreso, magic items with constant effect enchantments don't work this way either (and this is really disappointing). They don't even appear in "Select Magic Item" menu, though they do appear in "Magic" section of Inventory menu.
For what I know, Morrowind Code Patch and Morrowind Patch Project do nothing about it, but correct me if I'm wrong.
