Need help creating my character

Post by Dibbe »

I have the edition of morrowind with both the expansion packs, i think the game looks awesome, and i loveed oblivion, so i really want to get far into morrowind too.
the problem is ive never gotten any far at all in the game, ive probably installed the game about ten times, and had tons of differnet character that never got any far. I need help creating a good character, which skills are essential and stuff like that.
I was thinking of making an assassin like char, but i don't want to have to sneak around everything because i can't handle any combat, cuz thats what usually happens when i make a stealth char. I want to be able to actually fight my enemies, and do decent in stealth too.
And which magic schools are best for that kind of char?

IMHO, the best way in both Oblivion and Morrowind is to be a fighter for 8-10 levels, then start developing skills from mage and thief sections. By that moment you'd be tough enough (in terms of both HP and armor) to afford a number of arrows missing the target or spells failed to cast without being killed too soon. And you can always kill most enemies in 1-3 hits of your fighter's weapon when the situation is not to your favor.
As for skills, it's better to have level-ups controlled (to get +5 bonus to three attributes each time), so put skills you intend to use in "Miscellaneous" section.

I use this set of skills:
Major
Athletics - speed is essential and it's development can be fully controlled
Alteration - except for Water Breathing and Open, there are no spells that can't be replaced with enchantments or potions at earlier levels (and further on, you might not use Alteration spells at all)
Mysticism - given the extent of teleportation skills usage, it's better to have this skill highly developed from the beginning
Mercantile - for better prices and controlled development (because it only develops when you haggle)
Speechcraft - even if you bribe every trader you see this skill will develop like once in 1 or 2 levels

Minor
Axe and Blunt Weapons - too heavy to use
Block - it's best not to get hit at all than to hide behind the shield (although it's good to have shield equipped for additional armor points)
Hand-to-Hand - needed for some quests, but not good for real combat (try killing Storm Atronach with it :) )
Short Blade - the damage of daggers and such is too low

And don't forget: skills from "Miscellaneous" section should not be bought or learned from books, cuz they won't count on level-ups this way.

Good luck!

Sanctuary is extremely beneficial (thief birth sign), because it increases your ability to dodge (a lot).
Also, I find both the Spear and Marksman (not necessarily both; one or the other if that's your preference) skills to be useful.
Acrobatics and Athletics are good skills to have around, though somewhat uncontrollable, so watch out for that if you're trying to level up in a balanced manner.
As for magic, I'm not really one for spells, but I'd recommend Alteration or Illusion.

But really, you should try out a mix of skills to see what you like best!
