Killing the Red Dragon and The Order of the Radiant Heart question

Soooo, I've just read in the second place, that you shouldn't kill the Red Dragon until *after* talking to the Order of the Radiant Heart. However I'm playing through for the first time as Paladin and have *already* joined the Order, and killed the Dragon the first time I met him, because I had thought you would only be offered membership to the order if you'd killed the Dragon.....so as I'm not likely to play through as a Paladin again any time soon, I was wondering, what exactly differs if you kill the dragon later rather then sooner?

You get some quest xp if i recall correctly. Perhaps some mediocore item aswell, nothing important anyway
