Icewind Dale II installation problems

Post by kerijeanbean »

I just recently bought the game for my sons' birthday and we can't get it to install at all. When I try to install it on my computer running XP I get and error message that reads; "An installation support file could not be installed. Access denied." I don't even know where to go from there. The disc looks fine, no scratches or smudges. Do I have a bad disc?

I also read that someone was able to install Icewind Dale 11 on Windows 7. I can't get anything to happen when I put it in my son's computer with Windows 7 on it. Help!

I had no problem installing IWD2 on Windows 7. Didn't need to do anything special.

As for your other problem. Seems like the user you are using during the install does not have administrative rights. Unfortunately I don't remember how to enable admin privileges in XP since I haven't used it since Windows 7 came out.

I don't have my XP machine set up with multiple users so administrative rights can't be the issue. I have no problem installing other games.

I did get the game used, but I don't think that would be a problem since the disc looks fine.

Did you set up both, the XP and 7 machines yourself? If not, there may be another, hidden service account, however, I just to be on the safe side, check your user priveleges and verify that you're the administrator.

Make sure you're not installing the game to any external directory, such as a network drive. Try to stick with the default location (in case you aren't), just to see what happens.

Lastly, I strongly suggest that you turn OFF the UAC (User Account Control) component on your Windows 7 machine.

The computers had classified and proprietary information on them previously, so they were wiped clean. I had to install my own operating system on them. I have administrative rights on both computers. I will turn the UAC off on my son's machine. Like I said I have no problems installing any other game on the computers. We just put Sims 3 on both a couple of weeks ago and nothing has been changed in the settings.

Try running the instal from "Setup" and not autorun
If doesnt work, try running the Setup in older windows compatibility mode
If it doesn't work, then try opening all the CD folders one by one, should you get an access denied one.. well, let's hope this is not the case, because this is not the forum for such problems.

Should none of the above be the case - no idea how else to solve it. Except maybe making an ISO out of the CD and running it from HDD, where you have more control of the files, but i'm unsure if making an ISO is illegal even when you have a legit CD, so let's pretend i said nothing.

I guess this should have been asked first, but are your Windows XP updated with all the latest updates? If not, do that, and try again.
