Bethany's options are unfair (spoilers)

Post by Hatton »

It seems that a non-mage Hawke has a much more tragic story. My mage character left Carver at home and brought a fellow mage, Merrill, with her to protect her from the templars. Carver joined the templars, but that was his choice.
If I would play another game as a non-mage than Bethany would go to the Deap Roads too and she would die. I could only save her by cheating, and even than Hawke would fail her. A mage Hawke is free, Merrill is free, a demon warden is free, but Bethany must be in the Circle?!
Since Anders is a trouble and I hate the Grey Wardens, I won't even consider the third option.

either way, you lose your sibling at the end of Act 1 and (if they survive) they will have a minor role in Act 3 and the possibility of becoming a full companion at the end
while joining the Circle is pretty much Bethany's nightmare, and the Kirkwall Circle seems to be the worst of them all, she does actually come to accept and even enjoy her time there. by the time Act 3 rolls around she's basically adopted a Wynne-like role (except without dying and getting resurrected by a spirit, or being old and preachy) as teacher and protector of the junior mages
if she joins the Wardens she's bitter at first and hostile to Hawke (or at least she was the only time I've done that so far, but I already had high rivalry with her before the deep roads as I was doing a Templar sympathising playthrough) but eventually comes to accept her role as a Warden and forgives Hawke

she does evoke a lot more sympathy than Carver though, largely due to the fact that she's not a total arsehole (to be fair to Carver though he does have some redeeming qualities, especially when he finally does stand up for his sibling) and since she's taken to the Circle against her will while Carver joins the Templars willingly (pretty stupid considering the previous few quests established just how insane some of the Templars are, how some may be possessed by demons and all of them are addicted to lyrium)
but all things considered, provided you don't take her into the Deep Roads without Anders in your party, things turn out well in the end
I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me

Sad Spoiler(Highlight to read):
Spoiler
IF you spare Anders, or send him away, Bethany won't appear to be a companion at the end. She requires Anders' Death to appear. Carver has no such trouble, that I can detect.

@ Gold Dragon

Is this because you took Bethany to the deep roads? If she joined the circle then it must be down to some other decisions you made... or a high Rivalry with Bethany, because
Spoiler
I spared Anders and still got Bethany for the final battle when she joined the circle

Actually, it's what I was told. In my runthru, Bethany died even earlier than the Deep Roads, due to the fact that Maria Hawke was an Apostate Mage (my PC character).
