Hi - I've been playing this game on and off for about eleven years. I usually solo these days. I suddenly realised I'd never used the mage on it's own and decided to have a try. I used Tyris whos a fighter/ mage with my mage/thief.
She was dual class and I was multiclass. I picked her up after I'd gone up a few levels. Her fighter class stopped at level six.
My tank/thief can go through without any trouble, but with the mage thief I had lots of problems. Getting Gaxx ring was a hard job, even with the protection from magic scroll. The mace of disruption had very little effect on Gaxx guy. Maybe we didn't have enough punching power. Stange, cos I've knocked that guy out with Aerie on her own.
I'm on my way to Spellhold now, but it's been very hard work.
great to see this marvellous game is alive and well and that there are people still working to give us updates.
Hard Work - Spoilerish
You'll need a +5 weapon to hit Kangaxx, luckily mages have Melf's Minute Meteors which counts as a +5 weapon. If you use a Protection from Undead scroll, all undead creatures will just ignore you for its duration so it's much better than Protection from Magic.
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.
Mages say ye?
You have spells to survive nuclear explosions
You have spells to create nuclear explosions
You have spells to deal with creatures immune to nuclear explosions
You have spells to restore your spells
Can you see the pattern?
Kangaxx is to be dealt with using minute meteors, chains of horrid willings or items such as Ring of The Ram, Ring of Energy and simulacrum spell to have more uses of said rings
Random Tip #81 : Protection from Magical Energy allows you to ignore slayer change damage.

I hadn't thought of Magic Meteors, I use the protection from magic scrolls. Because of that, spells are out. I thought it was level four for Kangax. I had the posh flail and mace of disruption +2 which I thought had worked before, but it's a long time since I played.
I've started again with a fighter/mage/thief and picked up Viconia at levels 10
How long do you persevere with the dice for starting stats? I managed to get 28 (counting the last digits). That was the best I could do after trying for some time.

Actually, a +4 weapon will suffice, and with ToB installed, they're very easy to come by at Watcher's Keep.
Protection From Undead will occasionally break his script, so I would recommend Protection From Magic and just have him focus on your "magic tank" while your other party members pummel away.
As mentioned before, the Ring of the Ram can kill him pretty quickly. Three shots from it will take him out.
I just defeated Kangaxx as well, with a solo level 10 archer. xD

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”
It's best to avoid Protection from Undead when fighting Kangaxx like Cren said. That's because you fight his two forms and the second one is triggered by dialogue. If everyone in the party is protected from undead, dialogue doesn't happen and you're stuck.
As a mage, you actually have it easier than other classes. Just use protection spells to soak up his damage, (maybe that spell - don't know the name - which protects you from a specific school, to become immune to imprisonment) and melf's meteors.

Unless you use the SCSII fix which tones them down to +2 weapons.Curry wrote:You'll need a +5 weapon to hit Kangaxx, luckily mages have Melf's Minute Meteors which counts as a +5 weapon.
