Thief or Fighter/Thief

Post by cbarchuk »

Getting ready to start a new game here soon. I want to roll with a thief this time that does alot of backstabbing. Just wondering if should go with a pure thief or a fighter/thief? I guess my biggest concern with a pure thief is if I can his THACO low enough and my worry with the fighter/thief is he'll level extremely slow. Thoughts?

I think you should be a Fighter/Theif you may level really slow but trying to level is soo fun. Just being a theif has its advantages and disadvantages so does Fighter/Theif but if you were just a Theif you wouldnt have some of the things a Fighter might have so go Fighter/Theif Definatly.

Thief. Unlike in BG2, in the prequel they are not pathetic on their own.

Fighter/Thief multiclass. The extra versatility, hitpoints, damage, attacks per round, ability to wear helms and use shields in combat more than make up for the slower levelling, especially when you have Imoen right from the get-go (and other thieves later if you're not an Immy fan) to share skills with - you can let her focus on traps and locks while you backstab, and you can fight once you've backstabbed to boot.
This goes double if you're going to take them into BG2, especially if you have ToB.

Oh my, decisions decisions. Yea I pretty much want to focus on backstabbing. I haven't played BG and TotSC in so long that I don't remember how it plays so I'm looking forward to it. But...Stworca, you say pure thief. Please enlighten us sir :D

I'd rather have you re-read the comments carefully, take a pick, and try for yourself. :D

All the explanations point to the fighter/thief. Wow, that was easy.

You can go human fighter3/thief dualclass. This way you can master your primary backstab wapon type, specialize in another and backstab*4 within the XPCap.

Master either short swords (dagger of venom, short sword of backstabbing, throwing daggers), large swords (long swords, maybe Drizzt's scimitars) or staves (QS+3 buyable in UB), all three should work well.
