PLEASE HELP! cant finish act 2... am i missing something?

ok... so... i was doing a quest called "Blood for a stone" and i decided to give the rune to the stranger instead of doing the ritual part of the quest. since then i have completed many quests for Mr. Lexington and for the proffessor you find in the lion casino. now the problem is i have ran out of quests to do. normally to get further in the game you go to the quest log and select the ACT 2 tab and there are missions. I have none. the last mission is infact the "blood for a stone" and it is written in red as in a failure. is there a way to redo this mission? or am i missing something? I doubt this is the end of the game as there was no huge hard final boss. and im sure there are 4 or so acts.
Someone please help.

I got screwed in the school with the order of talking to people and no longer can move foward with game just kinda.got stuck. I think I have to start over since I went to everyone and everywhere I could as well as went to walkthroughs for next step but it sent me to david for the book and the dude.was already killed
