Basically, does Mavrick have to die in order for me to get this ability?
In Act 1, I let the spirit kill Gridley and Rupert and I let the guards have Malena. Now I'm in Act 2 and have the Little Sisters quest. It seems that I have to fail the quest in order for Mavrick to die, but I'm not sure if that's necessary in order to get the executioner ability (and that's the only reason I'd consider doing it).
Thanks.
W2: Executioner ability requirements
Heavy spoilers!
Well, I can say this:
I played through act 2 (having let Mavrick live) and by the time it was all over (Henselt dead at Roche's hand), I did NOT get the executioner ability.
Looks like I'll be replaying it with Mavrick getting killed to make sure.
Here's the overview of what I did:
Malena - told the soldiers monsters killed the guards, followed Malena into her trap, tracked her down and killed her afterward
Rupert and Gridley - allowed the ghost to lure them into its trap and kill them
Vencel Pugg - closed down the incense dealers shop, gave Vencel a fake formula, killed them all when they found out (I don't know if my Smell of Incense/Little Shop of Dreams decisions even factor into the executioner ability)
Mavrick - took his side against the spirits (so he lived and they died, which is apparently the correct path, but may prevent acquisition of the executioner ability)
Adam Pangratt - killed him
Henselt - let Roche kill him
...and like I said, I did NOT get the ability.
My concerns include:
Does letting the spirit kill Rupert and Gridley count as me executing a guilty party?
Do I have to kill Malena myself (via the previously described path) or does turning her over to the guard count as the same?
Does Mavrick have to die (and I have to fail that quest)?
I'll post back after my replay unless I hear otherwise beforehand.
Thanks.

Still no executioner ability!
Here's the overview of what I did in my replay:

Mavrick - took the demons side against him (so I killed him and then the demon that manifested)
Adam Pangratt - killed him
Henselt - let Roche kill him
...and I still did NOT get the ability. What gives?
My concerns include:
1. Does letting the spirit kill Rupert and Gridley count as me executing a guilty party?
2. Do I have to kill Malena myself (via the previously described path) or does turning her over to the guard count differently?
3. Whats' the deal with Mavrick? Kill him and fail quest or defend him and succeed at quest - and more importantly, how does this affect the executioner ability?
4. Are the incense merchant/vencel pugg involved at all?
5. Are there any other guilty" npc's that I have failed to consider?
I'd really appreciate some feedback from someone who got the ability.
Thanks.

*drumroll*
Got it!
So, after all is said and done I had to replay the prologue as well because...
*drumroll again*
...You have to kill Aryan LaValette in order to get the executioner ability. And then, it is safe to say, you must kill Adam Pangratt, let Roche kill Henselt, let the ghost kill Rupert and Gridley, and, at least in my playthrough, kill Malena personally by lying to the gurads and letting her lead me into her trap. I also killed Vencel Pugg, but I cannot say for sure that this matters. Perhaps he is an option if you didn't kill Rupe and Grid or Malena. Importantly for me is knowing that you do not have to kill Mavrick (as suggested on the wiki) b/c this fails that quest, and that would have stunk.
So the tradeoff here is that you will sacrifice the Strong Back ability from carrying Aryan out of prison, but you will have the opportunity to get the executioner ability.
Lotsa thanks to LenSquig on the GOG boards for his help - I would've never backtracked far enough to solve this one on my own. Thanks, man!
