The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

I do not agree that television is the best entertainment medium available today. I do however feel that it is the most easily accessible form of entertainment at least here in the United States where I live. I am not sure about other parts of the world, but here if you have a roof over your head and electricity then television probably makes it into the picture ahead of food because it is so cheap to have one as it costs nothing more than a bit on the electric bill each month after someone has made the initial purchase.
If you don't mind an older set then chances are you can get one for free just for taking it off someone's hands. They were practically giving away digital converter boxes a few years ago. I do not know if that is still the case or not. Television is a lot cheaper than buying physical books outside of borrowing from the library and you don't have to leave the house to enjoy television. Again, I don't know about other regions of the planet in this regard.
Gaming also comes with additional costs. If you go with console gaming you have to have the television already. Then there is the price of the console, games, and accessories. With PC gaming you have a whole other set of costs as you need a computer and monitor or a decent laptop and need to upgrade every few years. Anyone getting into serious gaming will probably also want internet at some point.
Television has some negatives. Very little of it really makes people think. Then again, due to the sheer amount of content available there doesn't need to be a very high percentage to have enjoyable television.
It also tends to encourage inactivity. I don't believe I have ever gotten any physical work done while watching television, but I've done things like weed a garden or build a deck while listening to audio books. The most I normally can manage with television is painting a miniature or doing some paperwork, but at that point I am not fully engaged with the television. I do not know about most households, but if one of the televisions are on here then it becomes close to impossible to get anything else done. It doesn't seem to matter what is actually on.
Despite all of the above, I feel there are some truly exceptional television programs. I don't agree that the book is always better than the show or movie. Take Steven King for example. Outside of the Dark Tower and some short stories I haven't read anything of his where I didn't like the filmed version better. Also, it is a decent means of obtaining up to the date news if you keep in mind the slight (or great in some cases) bias slant pretty much every big news organization puts on their delivery. The internet or newspaper is better for in depth coverage, but for the initial telling television is a fast delivery method.
I guess to boil what I've said down to its pure essence, while some of television is very great entertainment, the majority of television is pure vitriol in my opinion. For me to paint all of television with the same brush either does those good programs a disservice, or artificially inflates the value of bad television. Not all television is the same. If this is just about the delivery medium and not the actual content of television programs then television is probably my least favourable form of entertainment media and is normally my last choice when I don't specifically know what I want to be entertained by.

I agree with the post and particularly the conclusion.

I think sleeper adverts are the best form of entertainment
Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

and it changed because of the internetrobertwillton wrote:Yes i do feel that its the best way to entertain ourselves.Television has changed throughout the years, from wholesome family sitcoms and dramas of years ago, to the reality shows of today.
I feel pity for the older generations,tv is the only source of entertainment for lots of them and all they get is reality and music shows
