Really? Thieves can't stealth while looking for traps? :/

Post by NocturneN »

Playing around abit with a new char in Irencus' dungeon and just got Yoshimo. Naturally I'm using him to scout around abit, but a problem I've had with him before is again rearing it's ugly head: he can't stealth and at the same time be on the lookout for traps, bleh.

Nowadays I usually use Imoen as a thief, and she is rather good at scouting because she can become invisible and then have "Detect Traps" on at all times...it just seems awfully strange to me that a Mage/Thief is thus a better scout than a pure thief... I am wondering if this is indeed intended, or if it's a bug I'm having with my game? Possibly this a problem fixed by some mod, eh? It would be good to hear the community's thoughts on this.

Minsc- Pirate Lord? Such a name does not conjure images of righteous behavior. Stand still a moment and let Boo have a look at you.

Yup, that's how it is. No, I don't think it can be called a bug.
And yes, I agree it's silly. I suppose it's caused by the fact that all actions cancel the detection mode, and it may have been difficult to make an exception for this one particular action (I have no idea whatsoever about coding and stuff and am talking out of mu bum right now). I see no roleplaying reason for this whatsoever, although, when a thief has high enough skills, she remains invisible for some time after "leaving" hiding mode, so if her detection is good too, she may actually be able to detect traps while remaining hidden. IIRC, disarming them cancels stealth automatically anyway, though.

I suppose you could say a thief who is in hiding is focusing on staying hidden rather than detecting traps...but more likely you are right and it is an inconvenience with the code.

What I usually do when using Yoshimo (I have yet to play a thief myself, and Jan will take a long time until he can scout effectively with stealth) is indeed to scout abit with "Hide in Shadows", then I toggle "Detect Traps" and have him scout abit until I have him "Hide in Shadows" again, just before he actually becomes visible. It works well to a degree, alas, if I encounter enemies he can't "re-stealth" and might get caught. 'Tis also a fairly dangerous tactic if he hasn't high enough skill yet, either.

I thank you for your input, QuenGalad. :)

Ye, kinda sucky. But, Invisibility isnt a self-only spell so if Imoen is able to cast it, she will be able to cast it on Yoshimo too. I also assigned a script to a thief so he is always looking for traps. quite handy.

There is also a staff somewhere in Alkathla, held by evil people, which makes people invisible on-equip, in other words unlimited uses. Dont remember if it keeps people invisible though if they decide to look for traps.

True, though it's frustrating to have to waste spell slots because an ability isn't working as it should...well, as one would think, anyway.

Then I shall be on the lookout for this staff - thank you again Roller, your advice is much appreciated. :)
