I'm terribly sorry for asking what I suspect is a dumb question, but I've searched the forums and everyone seems preoccupied with problems once they have gotten the widescreen to sort of work. My issue is that I can't get it to work at all.
I installed it in the game directory, and when I go to the config menu there is only one unsupported resolution option available, and when I use this I still have the black spaces on each side of the screen as the game window is centered on the screen.

are you using the http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/ ?
if so, you should run the resulting file from the game directory and input the X and Y coords of your resolution.
You cannot use the BGConfig program to do this.
