Widescreen Help for a Noob

Post by Angmor »

Gah... This is getting annoying.

I'm a Baldur's Gate newb, having barely played for five minutes outside of Candlekeep. However, I've heard an awful lot about these games, and it looks like one where you can have a ton of fun if you can stick with it. My only real obstacle is the resolution. =/

I have a large monitor, and my screen resolution is 1280 by 768. Because of this, trying to play the first game alone became like trying to read an increasingly smaller eye-chart at the doctor's office. When I tried installing the vaunted Widescreen Mod, that installation of the game would become corrupted. I would start the game, everything would get green for the opening cinematics, then choke and die when the main screen came up. After several hours-long reinstallations, I gave it up. Now, a few months later, I plunked down the money for BG2. Both of these from GoG, by the way. I would be posting on their forums, but for some reason it's not letting me. =/

Now, seeing as this is one of the few series of RPGs where the story unfolds for the same characters, I very much want to play the original game first. Following the directions, I managed to load up WeiDu's BGT into my game, and had that working smoothly. With the uptick in the resolution, playing was at least mostly tolerable, but it was still causing a lot of eye-strain trying to deduce which pixel was which while Imoen and I were mauled to death by a direwolf. So I erased that saved game and attempted a second time to install the widescreen mod, following the directions I'm starting to know by heart. I set the game at 1280 by 720. NOW when I try to launch the game, the screen just flickers for a second, and then absolutely nothing happens.

I'm getting very frustrated now. I very much want to experience what is purportedly the most epic of RPGs, but I'm at a loss. As far as I can tell, I've done everything right, but I'm very new to this kind of game; When it comes to modding, it's almost like entering a different country for the first time. Any help from a native Baldur's Gate player would be GREATLY appreciated.

How big is your screen? 1024x768 looks great on my 1680x1050 without the widescreen-mod. Check the screenshots on the last post for reference.

Installing everything by hand without modding-experience was hell, I can definately imgaine it being even worse when you're also new to the game. :S

Either your screen's resolution is much bigger than mine, or you've done something wrong. I sadly have little experience with the widescreen-mod as the game looks fine without it, for me. Only thing I can do is remind you to read every mod-description thoroughly and pray you sort it out soon!
Selinde Truesword- I am clearly deranged. Look who I travel with! Minsc, meet the Pirate Lord!

Minsc- Pirate Lord? Such a name does not conjure images of righteous behavior. Stand still a moment and let Boo have a look at you.

Desharik- Er, why is your friend pointing a hamster at me?
