How do I backstab??

Post by Foss »

it is called backstab right?
The thing thief´s can do, and cause alot of damage...as I have never played a thief or tried with any of the NPC´s, I have no idea how you do it...
cuz I have just started ToB again, to complete again with an evil party. And I am a bounty hunter, a thief kit, and it would be good if knew how to backstab.

pretty simple...just hide in shadows, that'll be one of the buttons, the one that looks like a face sorta.
walk behind your target and attack.
I would be a serial killer if i didn't have such a strong distaste for manual labor

Well, that's because your Thac0 is too high... hence a miss. Correct me if I am wrong guys, but you get only ONE shot in backstab.. right? hmmz.. i could be wrong here.. hehe

you actually have till you become visible again which usually takes awhile. if you are a dualed fighter/thief, you usually have more than one attack per round, and can get at least a second try. which is where speed factor comes into play, it determines when in the round your next hit will occur.

@Foss: Did you put points into move silently also, cause both are needed to stealth.

@Elisher: Actually you can attempt a backstab as many times as you want, until you hit, your stealth "buffer" runs out, or you critical miss.

I will try, haven´t succeeded yet...how much damage does it give, and can I use invisibility instead of hide in shadow?

i have heard that invisibility works, but have not personally tested it.

the damage depends on what level you are.
if you click on kit description, it should tell you exactly when your backstab multiplier goes up.

You can backstab when invisible; doesn't matter how you became invisible.

If you have a Thief/Mage (or Thief with Use Any Item) cast Mislead, (s)he can backstab over and over again, because Mislead re-applies invisibility almost instantly after it's lost. :D

I'd like to add that in order to Hide in Shadows, there need to be shadows to hide in. Should you attempt to hide in the middle of a street on a sunny day, it won't work. Also, you can't hide as long as you're in the sight of hostile creatures. A mage could throw Invisibility on you though, or you could use a potion.
