How to survive first three areas in MOTB as sorcerer?

Post by Aribeth »

I try to play two different sorcerers, but I always run out of spells by the end of second barrows. What to do?

Can you rest or no?
Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

I'm fairly sure you can rest (and keep in mind it isn't dangerous until later in the game). Summons (and buffs) give most bang for your buck, also, put together the golem for some extra punch.

Yes - resting is available, with a chance of being interrupted based on the "threat" level. Still, it's only weaker spirits that spawn at the barrow.

It's often a good idea to rest BEFORE your spells are depleted. It's also a good idea to summon a longer duration summon before resting. That way if you are interrupted then they will often go after the summon. Both are good practice for later in the game as well.

Wizard/Sorcerer/Bard: http://nwn2.wikia.com/wiki/Shadow_Shield

Cleric/Druid/Favored Soul/Spirit Shaman: http://nwn2.wikia.com/wiki/Death_Ward

You can also boost your saves via several spells: Resistance, Greater Resistance, Protection from Spells, Heroism, Greater Heroism.

You can also use spell mantles.

The FB class (4th level or higher) when Frenzied is also immune to death effects for as long as the Frenzy lasts.

Further you can use items that give the immunity to death effects and/or items that provide an increase in all saves or an increase in fortitude saves. (..though even with really high fortitude saves you can still role a "1" which is an "auto-fail"; the only way to avoid the "auto-fail" is with either feat: Steadfast Determination or Epic Resilience.)

Can't rest, only wait. And by waiting you can't replenish spells slots. Or heal.

If you can't actually rest then something is wrong (reload and try again or start new). There is no place in MOTB where you can't rest (that I remember, and I've played it a LOT). HOWEVER, depending on the threat level, your rest will often be interrupted before you finish resting (and replenishing your spells).

Note: there is a condition that won't let you rest: when enemies are nearby (..but you should get a notice of that). In that case go kill them and try again. Another potential condition is when you have a lingering area effect spell that continues. For that, just wait it out until it dissipates.

For a Sorcerer in MOTB I tend to prefer the spell Planar Binding, Greater (particularly with a Neutral (NOT Good or Evil) alignment Sorcerer. It's the longest duration higher level summon in the game. It also can be used (instead of summoning) as a means of paralyzing Outsiders - which is useful in MOTB (..particularly at the end). Always use Mage Armor or Improved Mage Armor on your summon and add-in Spiderskin if you have that. Again, more of a distraction than a means of damaging opponents.

Here is a build I did for the OC and MOTB:

http://nwn2db.com/build/?129805

Note the "Notes" section when you scroll down the build page. Not only is there a full listing of spells (with most of the reasons why), but it includes an item listing. You can quickly craft a level 20 character with most of these items via Vordan's Hero Creator (do a web search on it), export the character with them, and then use that to start playing MOTB.

In the items section I have spec'ed the amulet: The Scarab of Greater Protection. This provides immunity to both Death spells and Level-drain spells and effects. (..it also adds-in 20 spell resistance.)
