in the walkthrough that ive got it says that i can give the dragon gold and items for the cup. but i cannot figure out how you do that it just doesnt give any dilog to do that. ive tried fighting it and i just keep getting killed
any help would be most welcome

Yeah, you CAN give him all your belongings... but that is a bad idea. I don't know if it even works, just kick his ass.
You can use the search button to find usefull ways to kill a dragon or just wait till somebody posts a good way to slay the nasty fiend.
All advice I can give you (long time no BG2) is to use enough "lower resistance" spells and disable his protection spells. Make sure you can hit him with your magic before you cast your damage spells, once you lowerd his resistance just keep hitting him with everything you got. Keep fiering arrows at him with your fighters and let them protect your spellcasters when necessary. Summoning help can be usefull too.

Use finger of death on the black dragon, along with a couple pets for him to play with, that is how I beat him the second time, got it from the strategy guides section of game banshee.com, the first time I just summoned a demon.
