Classified Ads

Post by HighLordDave »

Has anyone considered setting up a GameBanshee Classified Ads forum (for serious stuff, not things like Vivien auctioning off one of her "friends").

We all play a lot of games and our shelves are probably loaded with stuff we'd like to get rid of because we'll never play it again. Plus, there are some powergamers around who are constantly swapping out hardware and would probably like to unload the 8x8x24x CD burner they just pulled out of their machine because it's too slow (but would be great for someone looking to buy a new-for-you CD-RW). It would also provide a place for those of us looking for equipment and games to post our "wanted" lists.

I realise that this could fast become something like eBay, but what if it were just devoted to being like the classified ads in the paper and leaving the actual haggling to PMs and email?

This is a Great idea. I have some games I am looking to trade with. I am looking to get rid of DEUS EX. And would like to have some other kind of shooting game.

Sounds good to me, but my fear is that it wouldn't be a very popular forum, and eventually die out altogether. Maybe I'll set up a voting booth to see what kind of a draw we have for this type of thing.

I think I bigger concern should be payment methods. Is anyone really willing to let out address information?

Would you give out your name and address if you bought something over eBay? Or if you ordered anything by mail order catalog?

I realise that some people value their privacy and the general anonymity provided by the type of forum that GameBanshee is, but my address and phone number is accessible through any number of public domain outlets for anyone willing to do a little bit of research.

Participation in a Classified Ads forum would be strictly voluntary with the actual transaction taking place between two individuals with no official endorsement or policy from GameBanshee. I am simply looking for an outlet to swap games and/or hardware among GameBanshee members so those of us who tear down and rebuild their machines or buy a lot of software can pass stuff on that we don't get a lot of mileage out of anymore, but that maybe other folks can use.

It's a fascinating idea. :)

But there are some cons though :
- how to complain if the traded item as not as described i.e. the CD got scratched etc. There are some "fraud" cases happens on eBay.
-. The worst situation is where the selling /buying member live in different continent i.e USA & Europe, USA & Asia or England & USA
I'm not dead yet :D :p

I would presume that Buck would post a disclaimer absolving GameBanshee from any involvement or liability in such transactions and that the details of such transactions would be left strictly up to the seller and buyer(s). Of course, this would not be an auction-style site (like eBay or Yahoo! Auctions) but would be more like the auto trader or classified ads section of the local newspaper.

Buyers should of course be skeptical of any item being offered up for sale as well as any seller, but I for one would not be willing to sacrifice my good standing among the GameBanshee community just to make a couple of dollars. For instance, I would not put any item up for sale that I did not have complete faith in or advertise a game as being "like new, all manuals, CDs and original publications included" if it did not have everything. Similarly, there are several people around here (ie- Mr Sleep, Ned Flanders, and Mr. Flibble, just to name a few) who I would not hesitate to buy computer pieces from because they have demonstrated to me competence and general goodwill.

I am not proposing that GameBanshee create a section called GameBanshee Auctions (or gBay), but that a section be provided for members to swap games and hardware in good faith at fair exchange rates.

I too, would not risk my GB reputation either to scam a few bucks. Thanks for the good ref HLD. One of the large caveats I fear though from this is from perhaps new members who would come in and try to run a scam or two.

However, when I buy on ebay, I won't go near a seller with less than 100 feedback. The same would hold true for such things around here. If some member showed up with three total posts, I wouldn't reply to their ad.

I for one support the idea. I've got a near new copy of dungeon siege. I don't think out of ethics though I could sell it to any member with more than 200 posts.

so...here's my ad...well its got to be approved first.
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

where?
It's pretty easy, I mean just go kill a dragon, get laid.

"I never thought it would end like this,
just because I got no ****,
I'll shave my legs and wear a bra,
I'll even cut my p**** off for you."

Now that's a love poem if I ever heard one.
