backstab (urgent)

i started a new game 5 minutes ago with the assassin, but im not getting a backstab multiplier just the normal damage, im using a long sword to backstab is that the problem?

backstabing is only on demihumans am i right?

You can back stab anything (I always backstab fire giants...)

the only thing i managed to backstab was some duregar and some mephits in chap 1 (both my assassin and yoshi).

do i need to strike the exactly from the back?

i play a powerfull assassin and i sometimes cant hit ****. But that was mostly in the beginning. Now that i am high up and have 2 Katanas (ai always have) which are Celestral Fury and some Mak'Zarh**** (its hard name, i got it from bonus merchant). I love to coat poison on weapons. sux that assassin can get backstab X 7 only in ToB, it would rule if u could have X 7 backstabbing damage in SoA.

hmmmm...... you can

You have to be lvl 21 in order to get 7x Backstab.

a really cheap trick I read about in the bg faq page was to have thief mage cast mislead, then send the projected image of you out of your targets view. Mislead projects an image of you off the side and casts a improved invisibilty on the origianl. Now the funny thing is mislead's invisibility is suppose to be the fasted target breaklock in the game. Improved invisibility the attacker is visible for a few moments after backstab giving monsters enough to track you and target you with melee. however mislead is suppose to get you back into invidibility so fast they lose track of you almost immediately.

Don;t want to dual to fighter mage?

Use another trick I read about, buy the scroll, put in inventory, then right click to drink the potion then switch with the scroll. you've just cast a spell scroll without being a mage!

I've read about both from xyx's site.

@NeKr0mAnCeR: You do need to hit from the back to get backstab working. It does not need to be EXACTLY at the back, though. And did you know that if you are invisible you get +4 TACH0 bonus? And you do need to successfully hit for backstab. Mephits and Duergar you mentioned have high AC so you mght be more successful on them.

I've been having trouble with the backstab ability as well. I can never seem to use it against anyone! I just get 10 damage, when it should be more like 20. I don't know if it's the weapon I'm using (Arbanes Sword) or what. Just kind've weird...

Make sure you don't have the Boots of Speed equipped when you're trying to backstab, or get the patch for them at [url="http://members.home.net/mrkevvy/"]Baldurdash[/url]. They have a bug associated with them that causes your backstab to fail.

No, no boots of speed. In fact, because I just re-started as an assasin, I have no magical equipment (aside from a few nick nacks).

Um...this sounds silly, but you ARE invisible (hidden in shadow) when you are trying to backstab, right?

Yep. I have no problem using Yoshi and backstab, but my PC can't do it.
