The Sorcerer is the only one I've used to solo the game with, and it was the easiest run I had through the entire game ever. Challenging? Not really... Fun for a change? Bwa. It's funny to see how easy it is to defeat extremely difficult foes with more or less standard tactics, my sorcerer was a walking army slayer, not funny anymore.
...Of course I played the game without the XP Cap, so I'm not sure if that's what you had in mind with your initial question...

I've soloed SoA, with several characters. My favourite though was with my blade! Since he is not a true spell caster, nor a true warrior, it was tricky. On the plus side I had Knock memorized several times. I did the H'D quest first so I picked up the armour and boots of speed. From then on I could just outrun anyone if I needed to.
The waves came crashing in like blindness.
So I just stood and listened.

BARBARIAN

from a powergaming point of view i have to stand up for the good old barbarian. of all the straight kits i think him and the sorc are the most powerful, although i never liked those pesky spell slingers ;)

also PICK A HALFLING. i cannot remember the last time a spell worked against my little dude... his saving throws are totally obscene. he specializes in 2 handed swords so he can whirlwind with his Vorpal Sword. good god is he nasty =D
Please, turn your signatures off f00z *irony* ;)

definitely a spear fighter/mage

i have some kind of affinity for spears, i think. this one was hard because it had random rolled and unmodified stats. half-elven i think, and stats like str 15 int 16 con 13... i took the first one i saw... well its fun but its harder than you think. first of all, im not able to use level 8 spells throughout the ENTIRE game. second, i cannot copy enough number of my spells to spell book. third, i get absolutely no armor class modifiers or THAC0/damage modifier since all my stats are crappy. think of my saving throws... every time they charm, confuse, or frighten (fear, by magical means, of course) i am charmed, confused, and frightened.

real challenge comes when youre dealing with a dragon or high level wizards. cloudkill doesnt work after the patch. they come after you, dragon fear and pathetic hp goes down so fast; robe plus 13 con what do you think...the only way is to NOT kill the dragon. in case of mages, disintegrate, finger of death, symbols, fear, stun, polymorph etc they always win. charge and hope for the best thats the only way

slightly easier when you get to ToB... energy blades plus greater whirlwind... but still, there are monsters immune or resistant to missle weapons and piercing weapons (my spear was impaler). another thing, i dont have any high level spells. so i use magic missle a LOT.. and you can kill the dragons because now you have energy blades + whirlwind
BAH. I wish you all well on this relatively good day.

A fighter/mage/thief without the exp-cap.
Covers all classes and is realy powerfull (to powerfull).
But the question is witch i had the most fun, and that was it.

The hardes had to be a assasin.
In the beginning most fights are very hard but UAI makes it a lot easyer!
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

swashbuckler/mage

gotta love it. from a roleplaying POV its awesome AS WELL as a powergaming POV.nothing beats buffing up on spells while using celestial fury and malakar (soon hindo's doom) :D

I've soloed SOA (I have TOB installed) with a monk, F/M/T, Kensai/Mage, and Sorc, and half way through with a Blade. My first attempt was with the F/M/T, this is an EXCELLENT class to try your first solo with. You've got your mage spells, fighting ablilities so that you can actually hit things, and your thief abilities (backstabb kicks arse with this character ;) )

The Sorc became so incredibly powerful with the spells I had selected because he became such a high level so quickly. The start was a little tricky, but Melf's Minute Meteors saved me there :D

The monk was pretty good for something different as I'd never used one before. The start was a little hard with this guy as he had bad A/C, no MR, and coudln't hit a thing. But this improves a lot obviously as he levels up.

Kensai/Mage, heh, too easy.

The Blade was discontinued because I don't like Bards that much. Nothing personal, I know they can become powerful in the hands of someone who likes them, there's just other classes that suit my playing style better. I tried it, just not my thing :)

I'm going through again solo now with a F/M/T both SOA and TOB, now that I have a bit more spare time
I killed a rabid rabbit! I'm experienced now!

Undead hunter with the Gyth blade, the cloak of mirroring and the ring of Gaxx (is this the gadget that regenerates you 1 HP every second?) Its a killing machine (has 48% of kills in party), and he's inmune to those blasted vampires draining levels.

level 9 berserker/mage dual.
After i got the ring of gaxx i hardly ever used my spells, and when i did i was death incarnate. Very easy char and hyper powerful and nothing can stand against him. If you go through SOA with TOB installed its not even a challenge even on insane difficulty. With tensors and a storm giant str potion nothing in melee range lives for long. With the cloak of mirroring and shield of harmony most spell slings are a joke, a very bad one at that. I prefer dual wield'n with him but i ended up useing a shield most of the time due to pure laziness.

How do you solo and only have 48% of kills in your party? :D
Sorcery and Shadow together as one, the arcane and the dark united. Through our knowledge and skill none can stand against us. We are as one, infallible and invincible. The Shadow Mages.

Eerrr... When you said "solo" I understood single player gaming instead of multiplayer. Must have been falling sleep when I read this thread title. :o

Huh it dousn't mather if you solo a multiplayer or a single player game.
Soloing is goint through the game with only one character, no NPC's
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Power game a sorc, keeps me entertained when I'm bored.

However soloing with a kensai and fighter/thief was also fun.

definitely a monk. sure they kinda suck at the beginning level, but if you make one in TOB, they are pretty good. i have one that im trying to raise to max level. he's at lev. 39 now and he is a one man army. he is super fast and w/ out anything on at all to help his a/c or hp, his a/c is -9 and he has 152 hp. my next fav. class would have to be a swashbuckler. they have really low a/c as well when they get to higher levels. i also like that 'use anything' abililty they get... :D
soon, the world will be taken over by bunnies, so be nice to them!
Sailor Moon is the champion of love and justice, so no matter how many great weapons you have, you will still be defeated, because no matter how many times you kill her, she will always come back, so watch it!

Sorcerors are DA BOMB to solo with. Once you get lvl 8 spells it becomes pretty ridiculous. Oh, and if you remove the XP cap... let's not even go there.

I've also done F/T and it was nice. Now I wanna try something less cheese :D :D

An archer maybe? A monk would be quite a challenge in the beginning, but it will pay off in the end.

The only thing is, I always CLUA in the Bag of Holding because I am constantly tired of running out of inventory space.

Have to agree with the bag of holding. To much stuff and not enough hands to carry it all.

Doing my first solo with a barbarian. Just finished the keep and the tent. Seems easy so far. But with out cheese how is one to take out dragons. Still trying to think of away to do this. PLaying a barbarian I really want those scales. I would like to have them sooner then later. :D

I would go for monk, absolute Butt-Kick.

When he gets high enough in levels his fists become a +4 weapon and you can then get Ring of Gaxx and with his innate magic resistance that makes him invoulnerable to magic.

Irenicus doesn't stand a chance :D :p
