Well, you can't multi a kensai/mage, so you have to dual. For stats, I would place the most importance on DEX, INT, CON, WIS, STR, CHA (in that order).

For weapons, the katana (for dual-wielding) or staff (for the Staff of the Magi) are the most popular on the boards. You could also go for flails and warhammers (for the Flail of Ages and Crom Faeyr). There are also a lot of good longswords you could use.

As for when to dual class, everyone has a different opinion, but 9th level or 12th leve seem to be the most popular.
You will run afoul of both a common misconception and a family of bears.

try a search on "Kensai AND mage" (you can find the search button at the top of this page). You'll find some interesting threads. E.g. check out "Advice for newly started Kensai/mage", "Kensai/mage", "I can't dual Kensai" and "Weapon for the Kensai/mage".

For a start I suggest dualling at 9th, your char won't be a great fighter but you'll play more as a mage (and he will be quite solid anyway ! :) )...

Else I rather suggest 13th than 12th as you gain an additional 1/2 attack/round at 13th ! But it's quite longer, you'll have to wait for 1.25 M xp instead of 250k before dualling and will regain your former abilities at 2.75 M xp (mage 14 th) instead of 500 k (mage 10 th).

Personal choice after that ...

Again, I feel the call of duty!!

If your party is small, dual at level 13th, if not dual at 9th.

Stats: you'll need 15 STR and 17 INT. The others as you wish,
maybe a high dexterity. If you can don't sacrifice WIS
(for Wish and Limited Widh spells)

Weapons: My suggestion is DUALWIELD Celestial Fury and D'akkon Blade.
This is not the most "powerful" combination maybe (though Celestial
Fury is amazing), but it seems the most appropriate.
A kensai should use a bladed weapon, an "oriental" one is better.
And D'akkon blade is for fighter/mages only...

Equipment: Robe of Vecna and Amulet of Power, absolutely!
The rest will come...
You can't use bracers, but indeed you can use stones for the head.
And in ToB there is a really good one.

Follow Erhardt's advice, check these threads if you have the time:
(A LOT of info.
You'll know the strong (and weak) points of this char)

Kensai overrated?
Items Question with Dual classed charackters??

The flaming one: :)
Question about Hell and abilities in TOB

Berserker/Mage over Kensai/mage

The last is the one that firstly convinced me to try the char!
I posted a lot in those, anyway there are many others, just
search for kensai/mage!

Remember anyway that berserker/mages are also great.

if you have tob, use daakon zerk blade and andurividal, the burning sword, this gives you str 22 or so, and allows you to use belt slot for belt of inertial barrior, so a single chain contingency with prot from energy, and 2 skull traps caast on self, will leave you mussed in the hair, but will kill a room full of umber hulks in a second. skull fire is pure magic damage, which is bad but good for certain magic vulnerable creatures.
