Playing Through BG -> SOA

Post by Skuld »

I've been getting kinda bored waiting for IWD 2, NWN, and the 2 new Warcraft games to come out so I've decided go make a solo character and solo through BG and SOA. I opted for the Mage/Thief since you can get through most of the battles in BG using mainly magic and few finishing bowshots if needed. But I didn't really like BG 2 and never played it that much. Does anyone think that this Thief/Mage is a good character. And if only I could import all my gear with my PC then I'd have no problems with it at all.

I guess T/M is allright. I did my last game with F/T/M and with 1-2 NPC's (semisolo?) and looking back I should have opted for T/M only...

But with T/M you cannot use long bows which is a drawback. In BG 1 bow's are really effective, but you don't get good short bows untill in Baldur's Gate IIRC. So I recommend to develope good stealth/backstab tactic.

I'd go for a gnomish Thief/Illusionist.

Does he/she get the extra spell slots that the other specialized mages gets (like a pure Illusionist)?

You can import your character into BGII. Then, when you start a new game with your imported character and hit pause (spacebar) before the first scene in BGII has loaded (the Dungeon), you can quickly go to the inventory screen and drop all items on the ground. Then, when you hit unpause (spacebar), your equipment from BGI won't disappear from your inventory but you can actually just pick it up from the ground again. Timing is a bit of an issue here. Best advice I can give, is to hit pause as soon as you see the game cursor.

Thanks, I think I'll try that when I get there. And I thought about a Thief/Illusionist, but I chose an Elf so I could get 19 Dex.

One more thing. What are these good shortbows you speak of? And Yes I've been partial to Stealth when distributing my skill points. Also I know in BG you can backstab with any weapon, and in IWD you can only do it with piercing weapons. What's the deal with backstabing in BG 2?

There's a short bow called the "Eagle Bow" (Short Bow+2) you can get in Baldur's Gate, in the Blushing Mermaid Inn (there's a quest involved). Backstabbing works with blunt weapons as well in BGII. Basically, I think any weapon a Thief can use can be used to backstab in BGII.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think there is an easier way to pause without having to time it right. When you start the game, there's a loading screen, like the one that shows up when you're saving or going to a new area. If you hit spacebar while that screen is up, IIRC, it will immediately be paused when it reaches the pausable screen.

This is what I meant, SS. However, if you hit pause on the loading screen befòre the game cursor appears, the game will not be paused. The ideal timing would be to hit pause on the lauding screen, the instant the game cursor appears.

That's good. And with Tome of Dex you'll get it higher still. IMO that's really good thing for armor class alone. Not to mention all thieving and ranged weapon skills.
