Movies I've seen lately
Here are the movies I've seen in the past two weeks:
Please only post replies that have something to do with the following movies.
Life of Bryan- I have missed this movie at Blockbusters the past 20 times I went- but finaly saw it for the first times on Thirsday. Out of the two Monty Python movies I've seen (The other being the Holy Grail) it was the best.
It was truely hillarious. I liked the less slapsticky parts- especialy the vendor who insisted on hageling and the Roman soldier who corrected Bryan's spelling and gramma in his grafity. Also them singing on the crosses. In four words, ROFL.
Platoon- I'm trying to catch up on my directors- so here is my second Oliver Stone movie, (The first being Nixon) which I thought was a great movie- especialy the scenes in which Willem Defoe is shot. The first time was a great cinematic achievement- when you see Tom Berenger come past a tree, the shift to Defoe, who is smiling at him, the the close up of Defoe's face as his smile disapears when he realizes Berenger is going to kill him. It was great.
I'm searching for JFK.
2001: A space odyssy- On my great directors search, this was my second Kubrick (The first being Dr. Strangelov), and I didn't understand it at all. Dr. Strangelove was IMO much, much better.
I'm searching for full metal jacket and the Shining.
The colour purple- This is not on my search for great directors, but on the search for seeing all of the one greatest director's movies- which is of course Steven Spielberg(You'll notice him come up a lot in my posts). This is the latest Spielberg that I've seen for the first time in a long time. It was very unSpielberg in its nature- different from all his ther movies- most noticably in the entirely black cast- the movie started the careers of Oprah, Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover. It was not one of his best, but still pretty good- although too long.
Its main flaw was, of course the absence of John Williams (He will also come up a lot ) which is a mystery to me, since this is the only Spielberg feature film not scored by Williams- which has made all of Spielbergs film signifiantly better.
The Fugitive- on the a millionth time seeing this movie, I'm still impressed by how good it is. Tommy Lee Jones was amazing in it, definetly deserving the oscar.
Indiana Jones and the Last crusade- on my a billionth time seeing this, one of the 15 Spielberg movies I've seen- (the four I haven't seen being Always, Sugarland express, part of 1941, and part of Empire of the sun) is still the all around best movie I've ever seen. Others have excelled in their various fields, but this is so great from so many points of view- Sean Connery was great in his interactions with Harrison Ford- example:
Connery: "Their shooting at us!"
Ford (yelling):"I know Dad!!!"
Connery:"I'm sorry, but this is all a new expirience for me)
Ford:"Happens to me all the time"- ROFL
I also loved John Rhys Davies (the professor in Sliders, Gimli in LoTR) a Salah:
Ford:"Salah, I said no camels- thats five camels. Can't you count?"
and of course I can't leave out one of the best scores of all times- by John Williams (But of course )with "Scherzo for motorcycle and orchestra" being the tune which I've listened more than any other.
The Blues Brothers- A cute movie, with some good music, but what I liked was all the cameo's (Especialy since Spielberg was one of them )
The Usual suspects- is one of my favorite films only because of its amazing, shocking, great, tremendeus ending- which is the best ending of all times. I heard the dumbest review ever of it in Leonard Maltins review- ".... The ending negates the whole movie, making it a pointless movie....."- this a horrible review given by a person who has lost what little respect I'll ever have for him. To make it clear- I've seen this several times before.
Black Hawk down- I've seen this for the second time, this time in the movie theater (first time was on divex) to fully expirience it. It was much better this time, because aside from the better quality- I paid close attention to names and faces- making the movie a whole lot more understandible. The first time I didn't notice that it was Orlando Bloom who fell off the helicopter.
Ice age- A good movie, but mostly for kids. It was hillarious in the first half (I loved the dodo's), but then wasn't realy funny. All in all the first half was better than Shrek and monsters, but the dullness of the second half evens the score. Anyway I'd recommend it, especialy to people who are/have young children.
Only ten. A slow couple of weeks. Although my average rating of 8/10 is more than usual.

Life of Bryan- No question, this is a classic. Not even comparable to the Grail, but still great.
Platoon- Not bad, a bit over-American.
2001: A space odyssy- Pretentious yet thought-provoking.
The colour purple- Typical amercan-sitcom-spielberg ****. Terrible.
The Fugitive- Jones does a great job in this standard action movie template film, and makes it a great example of the genre.
Indiana Jones and the Last crusade- Terrible beyond belief.
The Blues Brothers- Poor in all respects.
The Usual suspects- Great. I knew it Spacey all along
Black Hawk down- Not see yet.
Ice age- Won't see.

Come not between the Witch King and his prey, or he will not slay thee in thy turn, but will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the lidless Eye.

Life of Bryan
Of the Monty Python movies, this is my third favourite, after Holy Grail and Meaning of Life. Both were funnier, although Life of Brian is the most throught-provoking (if such a term can be applied to a Monty Python movie). It was the Dogma of its day, although without Kevin Smith's irreverence and vulgarity. Funny in places, it doesn't beg for the audience participation and cult status of Holy Grail.
2001: A space odyssy-
Arguably the best sci-fi movie ever made, I prefer some of Kubrick's other films, notably A Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove. Still, 2001 was years ahead of its time.
The Blues Brothers-
One of my favourite movies of all time, The Blues Brothers is a cult classic. As a cinematic product, it is horrible. However, there are more good one-liners, cameos and musical numbers than in any other film. My friend and I used to be able to perform the scene in the restaurant line for line ("Your women . . . I want to buy your women. The little girl, your daughters. Sell them to me!").
"It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
By the way, did you catch Frank Oz?
Black Hawk down-
I haven't seen it, and probably won't. I watched it on the news, then read the book and saw a re-cap on the History Channel. I know how it ends. That's the same reason why I never saw Titanic.

2001: A Space Odyssey: I think people should read the book first before watching the movie. It's good in a way because the book and the script is the same. If the book came out first, and then the movie was made, I think it would not have been so great for me.
Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade: IMO the best movie in the Indiana Jones series. I love the interactions between Ford and Connery. The movies features some of my most memorable one-liners.
Ice Age: After seeing Monster Inc. and Shrek, this movie pales. Partially it is beacuse I am quite sick at CG cartoon movies. Their formula is usually the same: create some plots that only children can enjoy, throw in some jokes just to please the parents. I mean, it gets tiring. I think Ice Age is a good movie, but it kinds of get shadowed by Shrek and Monsters Inc. Now that the CG cartoon style has proven to be a success, I am sure we will see an onslaught of these types of movie.

@ Witch King...You have worse taste than Weasel's spam hoard. The acuteness of your eye for fine cinema is about equal to that of a triangle posessing only one altitude within its' area. Your egregious, imbecilic and grandisonous bloviations are like a cicatrization over the heinous eviscerations of your pompous posturing. You are but a pseudocarp on the olive-branch of wisdom. As we all know, NON SOLENT QUAE ABUNDANT VITIARE SCRIPTURAS, but after all, ignorantia excusat peccatum, so I will leave you to your lame and impotent conclusions, paralogisms and ignorance crasse with only one education...The Blues Brothers is the resplendant torre do conhecimento, a paragon of cinematic virtue, a supereminent specimen of the beau ideal...and it's got the record for most wrecked cop cars ever in one movie. So there. The Blues Brothers- Poor in all respects.

I saw Blade II with a bunch of guys last Sunday. It was a pretty intense. The CGIs were super cool, especially when Wesley Snipes fired silver bullets tipped with garlic extract into any vampire that happened to be in his way. They disintegrated... rather beautifully ("sniff"). I didn't know Blade was based on a comic book until seeing Stan Lee's name among the producers in the credits. Chalk this series up as anothr successful comic-book adaptation. So far, I think only Superman, Batman, and the X-men have been able to pull it off. The upcoming Spiderman flick promises to make the list, based on the trailers I've seen. People I speak to are actually looking forward to see it even more than Star Wars Episode II.

Life of Bryan- Great movie but I'd put it behind the holy grail
Platoon- good movie with good characterizations. Why all the morbid happiness about willem dafoe?
2001: A space odyssey- Decent adaptation of a good book. When it comes to kubrick, watch clockwork orange, dr. strangelove, or full metal jacket
The colour purple- never saw it
The Fugitive- Follows the action movie blockbuster template; still, ford and jones are good. I'd rather watch the tv series
Indiana Jones and the Last crusade- I'd rather watch 'raiders', one more time.
The Blues Brothers- It's B in the ABC's of movies. What more needs to be said.
The Usual suspects- Good 'hoods' movie with an outstanding sense of humor. many laughs to be had here.
Black Hawk down- Not seen yet.
Ice age- Not seen yet.

Guinness is good for you.

I've got a DVD on my PC so I check up on here.
FMG is a Stanely Kubrick movie about the Vietnam war. It follows Private Joker thru the war- from Boot camp to the end. (I'm still in the middle of it). Starring Mathiew Modine, Adam Baldwin and Lee Ermey- who was great in his role.
So far, it seems like a very good movie. I recommend it.
I could tell you more in about an hour.
