Monk Armor Class

Post by sewrratt »

Hey everyone... I've found what seems to be a bug. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Monks get a bonus of 1 to AC every two levels. At level 40, 40/2=20, so the monk receives a bonus of 20.

Monks start at +9 AC. therefore their AC is 9-20= -11.

Monks, between level 20 and level 40, get periodic bonuses to AC. These are of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The manual is unclear as to whether these bonuses are cumulative or if you get a bonus of 6, total.

Possibility One: -11-1-2-3-4-5-6= -32.
Possibility Two: -11-6= -17.

At level 40, a monk has -10 ac.

-32 does not equal -10. -17 does not equal -10. There is a problem here. Either the manual was written with half-assed knowledge of how the monk works, or they purposely installed a -10 cap to a monk's ac. Either way the manual should've documented this. If anyone sees an error in my reasoning, please reply.

I don't think it works that way. From what the manual says, you only get the AC bonus every two levels up to level 20. After that, they only get +1 AC at levels 21, 24, 27, 30, 35, and 40 for a TOTAL AC bonus of +6 for levels 20-40.

So, if a monk starts out with an AC of 9, then 20/2=10. So at level 20 the monk should be at -1. I'm assuming that you've maxed out the dex so that the starting point for the monk is 9 max out with the dex.

At 40th level, then the AC becomes -7. With equipment his should be lower.

Come to think of it, it should be even lower, I think that you didn't take into effect the dex modification to AC when starting with your base AC.
