With all the conflicting views of the USA I was wondering what makes you feel the way you do about the US (history, policies).

List if you want the good, the bad and the Ugly of the USA :) ;)

The Good: Last year, Americans gave $203 billion to charitable, non-profit organisations. That's about $1 out of every $50 in the GDP.

The Bad: Americans generate more garbage per capita than any other nation on earth.

The Ugly: We made William Shatner (and his corset) into a pop icon.

@HLD. No, thank *you*. :D

@Weasel, yeah, good take. But I kinda think van Cleef is good (law man), Clint is bad (bounty hunter). No question over Wallach. He's one ugly mo'fo'. :D

Good: People who are good at something mostly get good opportunites including all sorts of support. The efficient brain drain policy works in advantage of both the country and the individuals. An example is a friend of mine who got help from the US to flee the Soviet union with his entire family. He immediately got a top position at MIT when he came to the US, although he hardly spoke English. (He's a matematician, so it didn't matter a lot.) His brother plays in a symphony orchestra.

Bad: Foreign policy, esp in South America and the Middle east. The class society.

Ugly: That a child with a life threatning disease is allowed to die just because the insurances the family doesn't have an insurance that cover that specific antibiotics the child would need to survive. I can't accept that this happens in such a rich country.
The media bias which is the most severe I have encountered in a democratic soceity. The lack of scientific independance due to heavy industry influence.

I agree, I think van Cleef is the good and Clint is the bad.
