A reason to kill the archmage

Post by cjdevito »

There are two different ways to become archmage in the mages guild. The first is to hit rank eight and have done all of Skink's quests, then talk to him and you'll get to fire the current archmage Trebonius. This is the peaceful method. Ignore it :)

The second is to do all of Edwinna's quests and be rank eight, then talk to Trebonius and he'll challenge you to a duel. This is absolutely the way you want to go. Why? 'Cause he has an enchanted amulet better then anything you can make, that you get to loot off his corpse.

The Necromancers Amulet
+25 to intelligence, constant effect
+25 resistance to normal weapons, constant effect
+25 spell absorption, constant effect
+1 restore health, constant effect

The cumultive enchantment values of the above are far, far higher (more then quadruple) what you would be able to put into enchanting a top-level amulet yourself. The spell absorption alone is worth more then 300 points.

He also has a decent staff with a huuuuuge (6500) number of charges, but rather weak enchantments.

There IS another way to get the necromancers amulet, btw. If you don't become archmage before finishing the main game and if you complete the disappearance of the dwarfs quest, Trebonius will give you another quest -- kill all the telvanni high council.

Your journel entry for this quest will tell you that you don't think he's serious, but if you actually do it he'll reward you with the amulet afterwards.

There is yet another way to get your hands on that amulet: an extremely high sneak skill.

Not unless it exists someplace else in the game. Character with 100 sneak and 100 security cannot steal it from the archmage. Why? Because he has it equipped, and equipped items cannot be stolen.

@villain: Trebonius is in Vivec Mage's Guild.

@cjdevito: Maybe Fable was talking about backstabbing Trebonius. My assassin character has no trouble staying hidden, killing the arch-mage and looting his corpse with none the wiser (absolutely no bounty on my head whatsoever because he dies in one hit, while I'm sneaking). If you're not a Mage's Guild member, this is a valid way to get the amulet.

Damn, you're right, @Cjdevito. I'd forgotten about not being able to pick a worn goodie. So much for working up a character to grab it. :(

Well...looks like somebody's gonna have to die for the amulet.

If it's not Trebonius, then the virtual blood of the Telvanni High Council is gonna have to be spilled...but that's OK for the folks that work on commission ;)

Actually, I like Sirius_sam's backstab trick, with some reservations. If you're even thinking about joining mages, killing trebonius this way is a bad idea. It'd prevent you from ever becoming archmage, I think. Otherwise it'd work like a charm.

It's funny how the game handles backstabs and such...

If I try to pick someone's pocket, I'm usually discovered (leading to reloaded savegames) and am expelled/turned in/chased by guards...

If I either punch them out while sneaking or kill them in one hit, then I get away completely undetected with no repercussions (with the exception of possible terminated storylines/quests)

Moral ? If you have to take something off someone that's not equipped, it seems better to knock them out first (I've actually repaired relations with NPCs AFTER cleaning their clock...). And if you have to take an equipped item, then sneak and make sure you can kill them in one critical hit so you don't have the law on your tail ;)

Unfortunately *sigh* I AM a member (Magician) of the Mage's Guild and it looks like Trebonius is just gonna have to wait to get his later :)

Ok, I got an problem with Trebonius and the Mage guild.

Ok, here is my problem: I worked myself up to wizard and then went to vivec for some reason. When I talked to Trebonius he wanted to challenge me in the Arena. So I went to the Arena and killed him, I was automatically promoted to Master Wizard and my journal said I now control the Mages guilds in vardenfell. I now realised to get to Arch Mage level i needed 90 destruction and I only had 70 since I killed him when I was a wizard. So i played til I got 90 destruction going to Skink for my advancement to Arch Mage. And all Skink says is "Trebonius has the title, As long as he has it noone else can". The thing is that now, I can never be an archmage :( . They just dont understand that Trebonius is dead. I was wondering if someone know some solution to this problem?
