Anyone want to take a shot at explaining this one?
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
It would really depends on what situation you're talking about, but basically the heavier the armor, the more restricted you are while wearing it - which is a trade for the protection that the armor gives. I still haven't got the game yet, so I'm going by 3rd Ed rules - which might or might not be how it is in the game.
A good example would be trying to walk quitely while wearing plate mail; this is quite a difficult task to do, since almost every step you take results in the armor *clanking* against the ground and so on - almost everyone nearby would easily be able to hear you approaching.

I've wondered this also and figure it applies to hide/move silently vs. spot/listen DC checks. I just don't know if the wearer would receive a -2 to their rolls, the stalked a +2 to their rolls, or a combo of both or neither.
I also wonder what other feats and skills the armor check penalty applies to.

Not to mention sapping your energy quicker. Heavier the armor and weapons, the more rests you have to make.

any skills/actions that use DEX to calculate, for example most rogue skills and parry, will suffer a fixed # penalty from your armour.
Let's say you rolled a 16 on your parry and beat the opposed roll by 1 or 2, and if your armour has a -4 armor check penalty, your end roll will be 12 and actually lose that check.

Yes, I knew the penalty applied to thief skills, but I just found today that it applied to parry as well when I took off my armor and my parry skill jumped from 12 to 20!
